One last stop in the Czech Republic, the Lipno reservoir. With a little luck one can spot a moose there! Afterwards we are off to Austria, the land of mountans and tunnels (also Wiener Schnitzel and chocolate cakes \ud83d\ude0b<\/span><\/span>). We can’t get enough of the mountain scenery during the drive so we decide for a three day stop amongst them on our way towards the ocean. The “Totes Gebirge” (or Dead Mountains) is our resting place at the year round camping site in Grimmingsicht that we can heartly recommend. Come with us into the mountains and into the snow we go!<\/p>\n

In Tschechien legen wir noch einen Stopp am Lipno-Stausee ein, denn hier soll man mit etwas Gl\u00fcck Elche beobachten k\u00f6nnen. Danach gehts weiter nach \u00d6sterreich, das Land der Berge und der Tunnel (und des Wiener Schnitzels und der Sachertorte \ud83d\ude0b<\/span><\/span>). Wir k\u00f6nnen uns schon beim Autofahren nicht satt sehen an der Bergkulisse. Also entscheiden wir uns auf dem Weg ans Meer f\u00fcr einen dreit\u00e4gigen Aufenthalt in \u00d6sterreich. Wir w\u00e4hlen das “Tote Gebirge” und den ganzj\u00e4hrig ge\u00f6ffneten Campingplatz Grimmingsicht, den wir herzlich weiterempfehlen k\u00f6nnen. Kommt mit uns auf Wanderung hoch auf eine Alm im Schneemantel!<\/p>\n

Ferdinand rests at the Lipno reservoir in the Czech Republic at Camp Jestrabi. Surrounded by boats we feel home again, even though we are the only guests in the only year round camp spot. The infrastructure indicates that in summer a lot more must happen here.

Ferdinand rastet am Lipno-Stausee in Tschechien im Camp Jestrabi. Umgeben von Booten, f\u00fchlen wir uns zu Hause, obwohl wir die einzigen G\u00e4ste im einzigen ge\u00f6ffneten Wintercamp am Stausee sind. Die Infrastruktur l\u00e4sst erahnen, dass hier im Sommer wohl nicht nur ein B\u00e4r steppt. <\/div> <\/div>

We undertake a forest walk starting in Svaty Tomas, because here lives the largest population of Elks in middle Europe.

Wir unternehmen eine Wanderung mit Ausgangspunkt in Svaty Tomas, denn: In den Waldgebieten s\u00fcdlich des Lipno-Stausees leben Elche, die gr\u00f6\u00dfte st\u00e4ndige Population in Mitteleuropa! <\/div> <\/div>

If you know us you know that we are off the beaten track on the lookout for an Elk. We often find these large droppings and wonder if an elk came through.

Wer uns kennt wei\u00df: Es geht offroad auf Elch-Safari \ud83d\ude42 Diese gro\u00dfen Haufen finden wir oft und fragen uns, ob das wohl Elch-Losung ist. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

We sneak up to a salt licking stone. Pretty high up!

Wir schleichen an einen Salzleckstein heran. Ganz sch\u00f6n hohe Schulterh\u00f6he!! <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

After two hours of sneaking along an abandoned forest trail a boar jumps up 2m next to us and dashes off into the thicket. Our eyes were tuned to higher up animals like the Elk. A sleeping Ferrel Hog came at a surprise. It did stop at the next tree and peed, so we did get a nice shot of its behind. After that we didn’t sneak anymore.

Nach 2 Stunden sch\u00f6nster Waldwanderung schleichen wir \u00fcber einen zugewachsenen alten Forstweg, als ca. 2m neben uns ein Tier aufspringt und in den Wald rennt. Wir haben unsere Augen eher auf Elch-H\u00f6he, ein schlafendes Wildschwein war sehr \u00fcberraschend. Es bleibt am Waldrand stehen und pinkelt erstmal, wahrscheinlich vor Schreck. Ihr k\u00f6nnt Euch vorstellen, dass wir schnell das Weite gesucht haben, nun nicht mehr schleichend \ud83d\ude09 <\/div> <\/div>

After that we drove onward to Austria. The mountains were nice to look at during the drive.

Danach gehts nach \u00d6sterreich. Schon w\u00e4hrend der Autofahrt genie\u00dfen wir die Sicht auf die beeindruckenden Berge. <\/div> <\/div>

After ever tunnel there is quite more than just a light. A new mountain range awaits!

Wir durchfahren zahlreiche Tunnel und nach jeder Aufahrt gibt es neue Berge zu bestaunen! <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

We decide on the “Tote Gebirge” and undertake a hike from G\u00f6\u00dfel at the Grundl lake up to the mountain pasture at G\u00f6\u00dflalm.

Again and again we get a good view, but the clowds aree getting thicker.

The lake has shrunk down to the sice of a puddle and we are sweeting a waterfall despite the cold. But the air is nice and crisp.

Only short drinking stops on the way we soon reach the Alm. The houses are covered in a sugar coating of snow and we wish we could light up one of the fire places for the night.

Wir machen nur kurze Trinkpausen und erreichen schlie\u00dflich die Alm. Die H\u00e4uschen liegen friedlich im Schnee und wir w\u00fcnschten, wir k\u00f6nnten nun in einer H\u00fctte den Kamin anz\u00fcnden! <\/div> <\/div>

But instead we have a powerpicknick on the freezing porch. We actually wanted to head further up to the mountaintop “Salzofen” but the snow is getting too deep and night approaches. So we hardheartedly decide to head back in order to reach town before nightfall.

Stattdessen gibts bei Minusgraden ein schnelles Power-Picknick. Eigentlich wollten wir noch etwas weiter hoch bis zum “Salzofen”, aber das Laufen im Schnee wurde immer anstrengender. Schweren Herzens entscheiden wir uns f\u00fcr eine Route zur\u00fcck ins Tal, da wir nicht in die Dunkelheit kommen wollen. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

This was a good decision since we find ourselves in new company on the way down. A Chamois sleeps under a tree.

Das war ein gute Entscheidung, denn wir haben unverhofft Gesellschaft: Eine Bergg\u00e4mse kuschelt unter einem Baum. <\/div> <\/div>

We can spy on it for quite some time until it gets up, stretches and shakes and then trotts off into the woods.

Wir k\u00f6nnen Sie lange beobachten. Irgendwann steht sie auf, reckt und streckt sich, putzt sich und h\u00fcpft schlie\u00dflich von dannen. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

What a wintery landscape!

Going downhill everthing is different. The Grundl lanke gets larger and we even meet one of the owners of the Alm hutts. He tells us that nowadays noone lives up at the Alm, even in summer, so immediately we dream about all sorts of tourist traps one could undertake with the huts.

Bergab sieht es immer wieder ganz anders aus als bergauf! Der Grundlsee wird wieder gr\u00f6\u00dfer! Und wir treffen noch einen Almh\u00fcttenbesitzer, der uns erz\u00e4hlt, dass die Alm auch im Sommer nicht mehr bewohnt wird. Beim Abstieg spinnen wir gleich Almideen! <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

Und wir entdecken noch Smaragdenten auf dem Gr\u00fcndlsee! Die Erpel haben hinten eine Locke im Gefieder \ud83d\ude09 <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

After 13 km and 900m up and down again we deserve a good meal and cook up something nice. As a souvenir we have 2 days worth of sore muscles, so we treat ourselves to the spa “Grimmingtherme” \ud83d\ude09

Wir haben uns nach diesen 13 km und 900 H\u00f6henmetern noch ein leckeres Abendessen verdient. Wir werden nun als Andenken zwei Tage Muskelkater haben und g\u00f6nnen uns noch einen erholsamen Tag in der Grimmingtherme! \ud83d\ude09 <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>\n
