It was Dine’s birthday and we wanted to rush to be at the ocean in time. However we remembered on the drive that our guide book read somthing about great caves on the way in southern Slovenia. So after a quick look at the book we made a detour! And just in time for the last tour according to the book. Well, did I mention that the book was rather old? Gates closed! We trodded off and looked for a spot to stay the night. Coming through a small nearby village we found, of course, a closed camping ground. Mark talked to a man walking around town and luckly it was the owner of the camping grounds. So he opend the gate for us and we could even stay for free! We were quite happy since the temperature was a warm 15\u00b0C, so no heater needed. However our luck changed again and in the middle of the night the temperature plummeted down to 2\u00b0C with plenty of snowfall. The next day the caves were a nice constant 12\u00b0C throughout and we had plenty of time to warm up again and lots of excercise walking the long paths within. These caves are truely breathtaking and our pictures don’t reflect this in the least, since taking pictures was not wanted due to group security. So we had to make them quick and hidden, too bad for this great photo opportunity. In the evening we then finally reached the ocean, Dine’s birthday present \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

Wir wollten nun endlich ans Meer – zu Dines Geburtstag! Doch einen Tag zuvor fiel uns auf dem Weg zum Meer ein, dass wir im Reisef\u00fchrer von den gro\u00dfen H\u00f6hlen, den Skocjan Caves, im S\u00fcden Solweniens gelesen hatten. Also musste es doch noch ein Umweg sein! Wir waren p\u00fcnktlich zur letzten F\u00fchrung vor Ort, aber leider ist unser Lonely Planet etwas \u00e4lteren Datums… Die H\u00f6hlen hatten bei unserer Ankunft schon geschlossen, also suchten wir noch ein Pl\u00e4tzchen f\u00fcr die Nacht. Im Tal des n\u00e4chsten Dorfes fanden wir mal wieder einen geschlossener Campingplatz. Mark sprach einen Spazierg\u00e4nger mit Hund an, der sich zuf\u00e4llig als der Campingplatzbesitzer herausstellte. Volltreffer! Er \u00f6ffnete f\u00fcr uns das Tor und wir durften eine kostenlose Nacht auf seiner Wiese verbringen \ud83d\ude42 \u00dcber Nacht fiel Schnee und die Temperatur sank von 15 Grad am Abend auf 2 Grad am Morgen. Zum Gl\u00fcck erwarteten uns in der H\u00f6hle angenehme konstante 12 Grad zum Aufw\u00e4rmen! Diese H\u00f6hlen waren wirlich atemberaubend sch\u00f6n und unsere H\u00f6hlenbilder geben das nicht im mindesten wieder, denn das Photographieren wurde nur ungern gesehen, weil die Gruppe sonst nicht beisammen bleibt. Also mussten in der Dunkelheit schnelle Photos gemacht werden, sehr schade f\u00fcr die tollen Motive! Am Abend noch erreichen wir das Meer – Dines Geburtagsgeschenk \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

The closed camp, our stop for the night. The night becomes cold, rainy and snowy. Mark suddenly awakes from cold water dropping on his forehead while sleeping. The first impression of drip stone caves! Well, the door seems not to be that water tight anymore \ud83d\ude42

In diesem geschlossenem Camp verbringen wir eine regenreiche Nacht, am Morgen liegt sogar Schnee. Mark erwacht von Wassertropfen, welche auf seine Stirm tropfen. Das ist der Vorgeschmack auf die Tropfsteinh\u00f6hlen! Die T\u00fcrdichtung war dem vielen Regen nicht mehr gewachsen \ud83d\ude09 <\/div> <\/div>

The Skocjan caves are a UNESCO natural and cultural world heritage. They are the largest caves in Europe. 6 km of underground areas are maped and we can discover a small part during a guided tour.

Die Skocjan H\u00f6hlen sind UNESCO Weltnatur- und Kulturerbe. Sie sind die gr\u00f6\u00dften H\u00f6hlen Europas, 6 km sind erschlossen. Wir erleben einen Teil davon in einer zweist\u00fcndigen sehr guten F\u00fchrung. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

The “Silent Chamber” is full of stalagmites and -tites that are still growing. Some of them up to 15m in hight! And if ou spent your lifetime watching them grow you’d probably see just a cm more since the need around 100-150 years to grow a full cm! And we thought corals are slow growers…

Die “stille” Kammer ist voll von Stalagmiten und Stalagtiten. Hier stehen einige Riesen bis zu 15 Metern H\u00f6he, und sie wachsen noch immer! Tropfstein w\u00e4chst 1cm in 100-150 Jahren. Und wir dachten, Korallen wachsen langsam \ud83d\ude09 <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

The first exibitions into the caves started in 1839 with no electrical light. Instead the explorers used candles, flares and carbide lamps. For the latter one needed water, so these square pools were dug in regular intervals to fill up the lamps.

Die erste Expedition der H\u00f6hlen startete 1839, ohne elektrisches Licht. Die Entdecker nutzen Fackeln, Kerzen und Cabide-Lampen. F\u00fcr letztere ist Wasser n\u00f6tig, wozu die Entdecker in regelm\u00e4\u00dfigen Abst\u00e4nden solche Wassersammelbecken anlegten. <\/div> <\/div>

These days there are foot paths and everything is lit up with LEDs. Occasionally our guide turns off the light to show us what it was like in the old days, with just a candle.

Heute gibt es einen wundersch\u00f6n beleuchteten Rundweg. Gelegentlich verdunkelt unser Guide die H\u00f6hle und wir stellen uns vor, wie es wohl ist, die H\u00f6hlen nur im Licht einer kleinen Flamme “erblicken” zu k\u00f6nnen. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

The loud part of the caves is dominated by the river Reka (meaning river in slovenian \ud83d\ude42 ) that still carves through the rock finding ever new passages. The sound of the rushing water gets amplyfied in the cave even more! This great hall is around 90m high!

Im lauten Teil der H\u00f6hle dominiert der Fluss Reka (was im slowenischen Fluss bedeutet!) Reka gr\u00e4bt sein Bett durch das Gestein und findet immer wieder neue Wege. Das Getose des Wassers ist wahrlich berauschend in der Akustik der H\u00f6hle! Die gro\u00dfe Halle ist bis zu 90 Meter hoch! <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

\"Since <\/a>
Since all that water has to pass through a tight passage further downstream, the water level may vary a lot according to the weather and snow melting outside. This bridge crosses at around 45m hight and sometimes the waterlevel can reach even this far up!

Der Wasserstand schwankt je nach Regen und Schneeschmelze. Es kam schon vor, dass das Wasser bis zu dieser Br\u00fccke hoch stand. Das sind \u00fcbrigens 45 Meter, wenn wir das genau erinnern. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

This part is now dry, but the water that flowed through here once created these wonderful kaskade pools. Who knows, maybe it will flow again some time.

The strong rain and snow of last night lets the river fill again violently.

After the tour we take the upper foot path around the large sink holes the river has left behind. The little town Skocjan lies directly over one of the river caves.

Wir wandern danach noch auf dem oberirdischen Naturlehrpfad. Immer wieder gibt es gro\u00dfe L\u00f6cher in der Erde, welche von fr\u00fcheren Einst\u00fcrzen der H\u00f6hlen zeugen. Der Fluss flie\u00dft sozusagen unter dem D\u00f6rfchen Skocjan. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

In the middle of town a 100m deep sinkhole. In the past it was used for sacrifices, as a dump and as a trap during sieges. These days it’s well fenced in, luckely \ud83d\ude09 Don’t want to fall into this one when coming home drunk.

Mitten im Dorf erstreckt sich ein etwa 100 Meter tiefer Trichter. In der Vergangenheit wurde er auch f\u00fcr Opfergaben, als M\u00fcllhalde und auch als Falle genutzt. Heute ist er zum Gl\u00fcck eingez\u00e4unt.
