In the harbor cities and little towns of the Mediterranean coast one can’t overlook the many fishing boats and fish restaurants. Today we want to give this topic an entire post. Fishery is without question an important industrial and of course cultural factor for this region. Even we both like to eat fish now and then, but what we get to see in many of the harbor towns is really making us sad. One doesn’t get to see all the bycatch or the way some fishermen treat the animals on board when ordering a beautifully prepared fish in a restaurant. But in fact all these lost animals should be next to the plate with the fish we ordered to get some perspective of the problem. This stinks!<\/p>\n

Considering that we are not even allowed to go diving on our own in Croatia<\/a> unless we buy an overpriced extra license for around 330 \u20ac. Apparently the money, among others, is supposed to be used for ocean conservation, but it seems more like a joke to us! Do the fisheries policy also know anthing about conservation? We that want to just enjoy the underwater scenery have to pay a lumpy fee but if you pilage the seas in the most gruesome way (and against EU regulations), you are allowed to make lots of money. Something is entirely wrong in this picture!!!<\/p>\n

In den Hafenst\u00e4dten und Fischerd\u00f6rfern des Mittelmeeres sind die vielen Fischerboote und Fischrestaurants nat\u00fcrlich nicht zu \u00fcbersehen und wir widmen dem Thema Fischerei einen gesonderten Beitrag. Ohne Frage ist die Fischerei ein wichtiger Wirtschaftszweig an der K\u00fcste und obendrein identit\u00e4tsstiftend f\u00fcr die Region. Auch wir beide essen ab und an gerne Fisch, doch was wir in den Fischereih\u00e4fen zu sehen bekommen, macht uns wirklich traurig. All den Beifang sieht man nicht, wenn man im Restaurant den h\u00fcbsch zubereiteten Fisch serviert bekommt. Doch eigentlich m\u00fcssten alle Tiere, die ungewollt mitgefangen wurden, auch neben dem Tisch im Restaurant liegen. Das stinkt gewaltig!<\/p>\n

Daneben stimmt uns die Tatsache besonders nachdenklich, dass wir in Kroatien nicht mal auf eigene Faust individuell tauchen d\u00fcrfen<\/a>, sondern f\u00fcr happige umgerechnete 330 \u20ac eine Genehmigung kaufen m\u00fcssen. Das Geld aus diesem Erl\u00f6s soll laut Tauchgesetz unter anderem dem Schutz der Meere zu Gute kommen. Das ist wie ein schlechter Scherz! Wei\u00df die Fischereipolitik auch schon vom Meeresschutz? Wenn wir als Taucher das Meer bestaunen wollen, m\u00fcssen wir daf\u00fcr viel Geld bezahlen, wenn allerdings die Fischerei das Meer ausbeutet, kann sie damit viel Geld verdienen (und das auch gegen die EU Richtlinien). Irgendwas l\u00e4uft doch da falsch???<\/p>\n

Near Vrsar where we snorkeled in the Adriatic the evening scenery is always filled with fishing boats that head out for the night. They are a prominent feature on this coast.

In der N\u00e4he von Vrsar schnorchelten wir in der Adria. Im Sonnenuntergang fuhren Fischerboote raus aufs Meer. Sie geh\u00f6ren ohne Frage zum Bild der K\u00fcste. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

We also visited the fishery town of Vrsar. In November however not much is going on here tourism wise.

Wir besuchten auch das kleine Fischerdorf Vrsar, welches im November touristisch allerdings recht ausgestorben war. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

In Coper we came across many fishing boats. A lot of them had bottom trawling gear.

In Koper sahen wir sehr viele Fischerboote im Hafen. Einige hatten Vorrichtungen f\u00fcr Schleppnetze an Bord. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

These mussel beam trawling nets on the jetty are made to even dig into the soil.

Diese Muschel-Baumkurren auf dem Steg sind sogar so gebaut, dass sie sogar in den Boden eindringen beim Schleppen. <\/div> <\/div>

Know how! The fishermen don’t need fancy bouys. These are made from simple materials such as PET-bottles, cement, bambus and insulation foam and thus far cheaper.

Gewusst wie! Die Fischer bauen aus einfachen Mitteln ihre Netzmarkierungen: leere PET-Flaschen, Beton und Bambusstangen, getoppt mit Styropor und wei\u00dfer Plastikfolie als F\u00e4hnchen. <\/div> <\/div>

Some boats looked a little different with large floodlights all around. These are squid boats that attract the squid at night. They are so bright, that one can see them from space or as the brightest star on the horizion like we did.

Einige der Boote sind mit starken Lichtern rundherum ausgestattet. Damit werden im Dunklen unter anderem nachtaktive Tintenfische angelockt und dann gefangen. Sie sind so hell, dass man sie sogar vom Weltraum sehen kann oder wie wir als hellster Stern am Horizont. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

We wait for a boat fresh from the catch and are axious to see what he’s caught.

Wir beobachten, wie ein Fischerboot in den Hafen reinkommt und warten gespannt, welcher Fang wohl an Bord ist. <\/div> <\/div>

The boat carries lots of Mullets! These are then sorted into standard syrofoam boxes. After the 10th box we continue on our way. We didn’t see any bycatch here, but thats not too surprising with mullets. We would have loved to buy one, but our on board frying pan is way too small for these large fish.

Der Fischer hat jede Menge Meer\u00e4schen, welche er dann in genormte wei\u00dfe Styroporboxen packt. Bei der 10. Kiste gehen wir weiter, Beifang ist nicht zu sehen. Gern h\u00e4tten wir ihm eine abgekauft, doch unsere Bordpfanne ist f\u00fcr die Fische leider zu klein… <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

A few fishermen are preparing the nets for the next night. All the fish have been taken out but the nets are still full of snails, seastars and other bottom dwelling sea creatures. Some have landed in this crate, but even if you throw them back most do not survive.

Am Steg bereiten Fischer ihre Netze f\u00fcr die n\u00e4chste Ausfahrt vor. Die Fische sind schon entnommen, aber die Netze sind noch voll mit anderen bodenbewohnenden Meerestieren wie Muscheln, Schnecken, Seesternen und Krebsen, welche in dieser Kiste landen. Auch wenn sie zur\u00fcck ins Meer gekippt wird, leben wohl nicht mehr viele der Tiere. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

The saddest part however is when you take a closer look at the water around the boats. Many dead and rotting animals line the bottom. This is a dead ray that is supposed to be protected. This one is still a very small one, the larger ones still make it to the restaurants…

Richtig traurig wird es, wenn man ins Wasser rings um die Fischerboote schaut: Jede Menge tote Lebewesen. Hier ist ein toter Rochen zu sehen. Auch er soll eigentlich gesch\u00fczt sein. Dieser ist zu klein aber die gro\u00dfen schaffen es dennoch in die Restaurants. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

\"Sharks <\/a>
Sharks are also part of the unlanded and unanaccounted bycatch. We’ve seen way to many around the boats. Some even had their fins removed \ud83d\ude41

Haie sind ebenso Beifang, welchen die Fischer nicht mit anlanden. Wir haben viel zu viele davon tot rings um die Fischerboote gesehen, manche auch ohne flossen \ud83d\ude41 <\/div> <\/div>

This shark was displayed at a small fish market in Albania. If it is eaten, then at least it hasn’t died completly without use like the may others discarded.

In Albanien sahen wir sogar diesen Hai auf einem Fischmarkt! Wenn er gegessen wird, ist er immerhin nicht ganz so sinnlos gestorben, wie all die Haie, die als Beifang verenden. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

As we wait for our ferry in Greece we also visit the local fish markets. The marble plate reminds us of the better days of fishing. A glimpse of which Mark still has seen as a kid. Shifting baseline, yet another problem of fishing.

Als wir in Griechenland auf unsere F\u00e4hre warten, besuchen wir die Fischm\u00e4rkte am Hafen. Diese Marmorplatte im Eingangsbereich entsammt wohl Wunschdenken oder besseren Zeiten, wie Mark es hier als kleines Kind noch teilweise erleben durfte. Das shifting baseline Syndrom ist ein weiteres Problem der Fischerei. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

The little fish markets are right next to the restaurants, so the chefs always have a fresh supply.

Die kleinen Fisch\u00e4rkte sind gleich neben den Fischrestaurants am Hafen und die K\u00f6che k\u00f6nnen sich jederzeit frische Ware holen. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

\"Lager <\/a>
Lager fish like this little Bonito have become a rare sight in the shops.

Gro\u00dffische wie dieser kleine Bonito sind aber eher selten in der Auslage. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

\"Squid, <\/a>
Squid, like these calamari are still plentiful and an indicator for changes in the ecosystem. We however haven’t see one yet while diving at night.

Tintenfische wie diese Kalmare gibt es zahlreich auf dem Fischmarkt. Sie sind ein Zeichen f\u00fcr sich ver\u00e4ndernde \u00d6kosysteme. Beim Tauchen des nachts haben wir in diesem Jahr jedoch noch keinen einzigen dieser nachtaktiven Tiere gesehen. Ungew\u00f6hnlich! <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

Dori?! We probably should have bought this poor little Dorade in order to bring it back to the sea.

Instead we buy some small fresh fish.

At least they fit the frying pan and are a slightly better choice these days.

Since we too like the occasional fish in the pan. And while we are enjoying the nice meal inside the camper, someone cleaned the oily pan outside spick and span: The local camping ground cat.
