Leaving Krka behind we drive down south. Now it’s time for cities! First stop is Split and then definitly towards Dubrovnik. Both are UNESCO world heritage sites since 1979. Split is a city with approx. 170.000 inhabitants and thus the second largest city in Croatia. It has a very nice old city center directly on the water and we plan for 2 days. After an exciting drive with our “Ferdi” through a bustling mediterranean road network we finally find a suitable parking space for our large camper. Poor Dine got quite the shock from all that sudden traffic and at least for a short while never wants to drive again. Our ambulance finally finds it’s place on a very expensive parking space right at the city center and we are off into the crowds walking through the town. While we are strolling through the alleys we get a little annoyed that seemingly on each pretty corner someone wants to hustle the cheapest of cheapest souveniers and they are all the same flashy colorful bullshit. Who buys all this crap made in China? It seems that Split has also fallen to cruise ships as well and the guests all rush through the streets in order to take in everything the place has to offer in the little time they have on land. The seach for a toilet is also a challenge and the lines are long. So it’s not surprising that many hidden corner is quite smelly. We definately prefer nature highlights over city highlights and thus are not the ideal targets for this kind of tourism. So it’s not surprising that after dinner we decide not to stay the night and split Split! We head on down the empty Croatian autobahn towards Dubrovnik thinking that another city like this one is not exactly what we want. After the sun is set we parked Ferdi somewhere next to the highway just before Croatia is divided by Bosnia and Herzegovina at Neum. Dubrovnik after all lies in a somewhat exclave of Croatia. We don’t want to exit and enter the EU with our surprisingly flashy camper in the middle of the night, so we wait for the next day. But that is part of the next post. Von Krka fahren wir weiter Richtung S\u00fcden, denn diesmal stehen St\u00e4dtetrips auf dem Programm. Wir sehen uns Split an und wollen danach auch noch unbedingt nach Dubrovnik, beide St\u00e4dte sind seit 1979 UNESCO Weltkulturerbe. Doch zuerst auf nach Split, mit ungef\u00e4hr 170.000 Einwohnern die zweitgr\u00f6\u00dfte Stadt Kroatiens. Sie bietet eine h\u00fcbsche Altstadt direkt an der Adria – wir planen also zwei Tage daf\u00fcr ein. Nach einer abenteuerlichen Autofahrt durch Split mit unserem Krankenwagen “Ferdi” auf der Jagd nach einem krankenwagentauglichen Parkplatz, nach welcher Dine schwei\u00dfgebadet kurzzeitig nie wieder Auto fahren will, parken wir teuer, aber daf\u00fcr direkt am historischen Zentrum und st\u00fcrzen uns ins Get\u00fcmmel. W\u00e4hrend wir durch Split flanieren und das Flair auf uns wirken lassen, beginnt es uns ganz langsam etwas zu nerven, dass an jeder h\u00fcbschen Ecke billige und noch billigere Souvenirshops aus dem Boden sprie\u00dfen, die alle den gleichen bunten blinkenden Schnickschnack im Sortiment haben. Wer soll das blo\u00df alles kaufen? Es wirkt ganz so, als ob sich Split auf den Kreuzfahrttourismus eingeschossen hat, dessen G\u00e4ste nur wenige Stunden Zeit f\u00fcr Landg\u00e4nge bekommen. Auch die Suche nach einer Toilette dauert recht lange und so wundert es uns auch nicht, dass einige der engen Altstadtgassen nach Pippi riechen. Es muss dazu gesagt werden, dass wir beide immer ein Naturhighlight einem St\u00e4dtehighlight vorziehen w\u00fcrden und dass wir nicht unbedingt die klassischen St\u00e4dtetouristen sind. So ist es auch nicht verwunderlich, dass wir uns nach dem Abendessen keinen Schlafplatz in der Stadt suchen. Split ist h\u00fcbsch, hat uns allerdings f\u00fcr einen weiteren Erkundungstag nicht gefesselt. Kurzerhand fahren wir weiter \u00fcber leere kroatische Autobahnen Richtung S\u00fcden, Richtung Dubrovnik, obwohl uns der Gedanke an eine weitere Stadt nicht ganz verlockend erscheint. Nach Einbruch der Dunkelheit parken wir unseren Ferdi schlie\u00dflich irgendwo nahe der Autobahn, kurz bevor Kroatien durch Bosnien und Herzegowina in Neum geteilt wird, denn Dubrovnik liegt sozusagen in einer kroatischen Exklave. Das kurzzeitige Verlassen der EU und die Grenzkontrollen wollen wir mit unserem auff\u00e4lligem Gef\u00e4hrt gern bei Tageslicht absolvieren. Doch dazu mehr im n\u00e4chsten Beitrag! Next to the promenade at the harbor of Split, the Riva, lay the outer walls of the Diokletian Palace whos remains and reconstruction now form the old city center of Split. The palace thus has transformed itsself into a city.

Direkt an der Hafenpromenade von Split, der Riva, liegen die s\u00fcdlichen Au\u00dfenmauern des alten Diokletianpalastes, dessen \u00dcberreste und bauliche Umwandlungen heute die Altstadt von Split ausmachen. Der Palast hat sich gewisserma\u00dfen \u00fcber die Jahre in eine Stadt verwandelt. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

Many old palms line the Riva and offer shade for the many cafee’s and restaurants which even in November are quite lively.

Viele alte Palmen sind h\u00fcbsch bewachsen und spenden Schatten f\u00fcr die zahlreichen Caf\u00e9s und Restaurants, die sogar im November ziemlich lebendig sind. <\/div> <\/div>

Again we share the location with many Cruise ship guests, but we are used to that.

Mal wieder teilen wir uns die Location mit hunderten Kreuzfahrttouristen, aber das kennen wir ja mittlerweile schon. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

We sneak in through on of the wall entrances and the vaults therein and surface again at the Peristyl, a plaza lined with columns. This used to be cultural gathering spot in the old roman palace.

Wir schl\u00fcpfen durch einen der Eing\u00e4nge durch die dicken Mauern und duch die Kellergew\u00f6lbe des Palastes und tauchen in diesem S\u00e4ulenhof, dem Peristyl, wieder auf. Es handelt sich um einen fr\u00fcheren Versammlungsort des Palastes. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

Over the silver gate the wine has become red. All around us the many tourguides lead their sheep in every language possible. The groups are small, otherwise they wouldn’t fit through the narrow streets.

Between all the historic sites the city still lives. Over millenia it has often be transformed or rebuilt so it’s a big mix of different epochs.

On the “Fruit square” we discover this Venitian tower with it’s eight corners in which the pigeons find great acustics.
