We leave Croatia and the EU again. This time in direction of Montenegro where beautiful landscapes, wonderful cities and friendly people await us! Montenegro may be a small country but it has a lot to offer! Our first stop is the bay of Kotor. Mark has previously seen this bay from the air, filled with huge cruise ships. But this time we get to experience it without the huge polluting monsters. The bay offers 4 basins and runs within the Orjen and Lov\u0107en mountain range into the country through a narrow passage. The surrounding mountains reach heights of over 1000m and are very steep. The towns and cities along the bay are thus usually tucked neatly along the rim of the waters edge. Sometimes it looks like there’s no space at all for them. In the old cities the houses and churches tower on top of each other and modern cars have no place on the narrow marble paths between them. A trip to the past but still the towns are lively. There’s a bit of luck involved being inside this wondrous panorama, the weather is also on our side to enjoy it all. It seems the mountains are protecting us from the storms ahead. Come with us into the bay with a blast.<\/p>\n

Wir verlassen Kroatien und die EU erneut. Diesmal nach Montenegro, wo uns tolle Landschaften, h\u00fcbsche St\u00e4dte und freundliche Menschen erwarten! Montenegro ist zwar ein kleines Land, hat aber eine Menge zu bieten! Unser erster Stopp ist die sagenumwobene Bucht von Kotor. Mark hat diese Bucht schon mal aus dem Flugzeug gesehen, mit mehreren Kreuzfahrtschiffen darin, doch diesmal erleben wir eine Destination ohne Riesenpott \ud83d\ude42 Die Bucht von Kotor besteht aus vier Becken und zieht sich durch die Gebirge Orjen und Lov\u0107en durch einige Meerengen hinein ins Landesinnere von Montenegro. Die Berge rings herum ragen bis zu 1000 Meter hoch und steil hinauf. Die Siedlungen entlang der Bucht liegen meist am Fu\u00df der steilen Berge, manchmal sieht es so aus, als ob eigentlich gar kein Platz f\u00fcr sie da w\u00e4re. In den kleinen Altst\u00e4dten stapeln sich die H\u00e4user und Kirchen auf engstem Raum und bieten mit all den Marmorstra\u00dfen, auf denen meist keine Autos fahren, einen Besuch in einer vergangenen Welt, die aber trotzdem sehr lebendig daher kommt. In diesem gigantischen Panorama ist auch ein bi\u00dfchen Gl\u00fcck dabei, denn wir genie\u00dfen ein Traumwetterchen. Die Berge ringsherum halten wohl die meisten Regenwolken fern. Wir nehmen Euch mit in die Bucht mit Wucht!<\/p>\n

The mountains tower over and surround the bay. It seems like we are in a fjord in Norway. We wander through Herceg Novi and bunker some provisions, Montenegrian style but continue soon after.

Die Berge t\u00fcrmen sich auf und umschlie\u00dfen die Bucht von Kotor und wir f\u00fchlen uns etwas wie an einem Fjord in Norwegen. Wir bummeln durch Herceg Novi und verproviantieren uns auf montenegroinisch, fahren jedoch bald weiter. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

\"The <\/a>
The road leads us past Perast. The town lies at the foot of the Orjen mountains. The whole town with its 10 churches and many captain palaces is under monument protection.

Und zwar nach Perast. Der Ort liegt am Fu\u00dfe des Orjen-Gebirge. Mit seinen 10 Kirchen und zahlreichen Kapit\u00e4nspal\u00e4sten steht der komplette Ort unter Denkmalschutz. <\/div> <\/div>

\"Again <\/a>
Again many aquacultures lie on the way, well protected.

Auf dem Weg passieren wir Fisch-Aquakulturen, die Bucht ist daf\u00fcr wirklich ruhig gelegen. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

\"St. <\/a>
St. Marien and St. Gerorg are two islands, just outside Perast and remind us of two unequal sisters. They can be visited by boat.

St. Marien und St. Gerorg sind zwei Perast vorgelagerte Inseln und erinnern an zwei ungleiche Schwestern. Per Boot k\u00f6nnen die Inseln besichtigt werden. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

\"St. <\/a>
St. Gerog is a naturaly formed island and is tightly grown over with Cypress trees. The island features a Benidikt-monastery as well as the graveyard of Perast.

St. Georg ist nat\u00fcrlichen Ursprungs und mit hohen Zypresen bewachsen. Die Insel beherbergt ein Benediktinerkloster sowie den Friedhof von Perast. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

\"On <\/a>
On the other side is St. Marien, an artificial island. Even today tradition has it that in June the locals travel to the island for a big feast and brings stones to throw into the sea, enlarging the island.

St. Marien wiederum ist k\u00fcnstlich aufgesch\u00fcttet. Noch heute wird einmal im Jahr im Juni ein Fest gefeiert, bei dem die Einheimischen zur Insel \u00fcbersetzen und Steine ins Meer werfen um die Insel zu festigen. <\/div> <\/div>

\"Ferdi <\/a>
Ferdi gets the best view in town! The first palace in town is also the only one which you can visit. It has been converted into a museum abaout Perast and its palaces. The coastal road in fron of the palaces has only been built in the 19th century. Until then the palaces were directly on the water front.

Ferdi genie\u00dft wieder Loge-Parkplatz! Der erste Palast ist als einziger zug\u00e4nglich und beherbergt ein Museum \u00fcber Perast und seine Kapit\u00e4nspal\u00e4ste. Die K\u00fcstenstra\u00dfe zwischen den Pal\u00e4sten und dem Meer wurde erst im 19. Jh. gebaut. Bis dahin lagen die Kapit\u00e4nspal\u00e4ste direkt am Wasser. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

The captains must have been able to view their ships from this balcony. During the prime time in the 17th and 18th century there were 4 major shipping companies that had around 100 ships together.

Von diesem traumhaften Balkon blickte der Kapit\u00e4n wohl des \u00d6fteren auf seine Schiffchen. W\u00e4hrend seiner Bl\u00fctezeit im 17. und 18. Jh. gab es in Perast 4 Reedereien, die zusammen 100 gro\u00dfe Handelsschiffe unterhielten. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

\"Perast <\/a>
Perast has 10 churches which are quite a few for such a small town with just around 1600 people. This free standing tower of St. Nikola is 55m high and the highest in the whole bay. The old captains have sponsored a lot of money for the church.

Perast hat 10 Kirchen, das sind ganz sch\u00f6n viele verglichen mit seiner Einwohnerzahl, denn hier lebten nur ca. 1600 Menschen. Dieser freistehende Kirchturm von St. Nikola ist 55 Meter hoch und zugleich der h\u00f6chste in der gesamten Bucht. Der Bau der Kirchen wurde von den gl\u00e4ubigen Kapit\u00e4nen finanziell gro\u00dfz\u00fcgig unterst\u00fctzt. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

The back alleys are still full of empty houses and cats. This one has found the optimal hiding point. Dine would have loved to take her with us.

In den hinteren Gassen gibt es immer wieder leerstehende H\u00e4user. Und jede Menge Katzen! Diese hier tarnt sich gut und Dine h\u00e4tte sie am liebsten mitgenommen \ud83d\ude42 <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

We also come across this odd looking fruit or is it a vegetable? Late we find out that it is a Chayote from the family of pumpkins.

Au\u00dferdem begegnen wir einer uns unbekannten Frucht und finden sp\u00e4ter heraus: Es ist eine Chayote aus der Familie der K\u00fcrbisgew\u00e4chse. <\/div> <\/div>

\"Time <\/a>
Time for a shower! So off to the next camping ground! However there was only cold water, brr! The lady was kind enough to let us stay for just 5 \u20ac due to the cold water. We had a shower anyway. At night a few neighbors arrived and in the dawn light Dine thought someone was urinating against the tent \ud83d\ude00

Wir wollten (oder mussten….?) auch mal wieder duschen, also Campingplatz! Da es nur kaltes Wasser gibt, brauchen wir nur 5 Euro f\u00fcr eine Nacht zu bezahlen. Geduscht haben wir trotzdem! Nachts bekommen wir noch Nachbarn. Im Morgenlicht glaubt Dine ihren Augen kaum: Da pinkelt einer ans Zelt \ud83d\ude00 <\/div> <\/div>

\"Afterwards <\/a>
Afterwards we were allowed to pick a few kiwis at the camp and off we were to Kotor! This city is advertised as the jewel of Montenegro and this we can vouch for! Kotor is surrounded by a 4.5 km long wall.

Auf dem Campingplatz d\u00fcrfen wir noch Kiwis pfl\u00fccken, dann gehts endlich nach Kotor! Diese Stadt wird gehandelt als Juwel von Montenegro und das unterschreiben wir sofort. Kotor ist von dieser 4,5km langen Stadtmauer umgeben. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

\"Entering <\/a>
Entering through the harbor gate we find ourselves in the old city full of plazas, cafes and shops. This is the clock tower Gradsk Kula. In the middle ages it was also the prison of the city.

Wir schl\u00fcpfen durch das Hafentor in die Altstadt und stehen auf einem belebten Platz mit Caf\u00e9s, Restaurants und kleinen Gesch\u00e4ften. Au\u00dferdem thront hier der Uhrturm Gradska Kula. Im Mittelalter war er auch das Gef\u00e4ngnis der Stadt. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

\"Kotors <\/a>
Kotors alleys are narrow, some less than 2m wide. Still most houses are several story buildings so many alleys are dark. In summer it must be nice and cool.

Kotors Gassen sind schmal, manche weniger als 2 Meter breit. Dennoch sind viele H\u00e4user mehrst\u00f6ckig, so dass viele Gassen ohne Sonnenlicht bleiben, im Sommer ist das bestimmt ein Segen! <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

The city of cats! This resident is chilling in the sun. Kotor even has a dedicated cat museum!

Manche Bewohner chillen umso gem\u00fctlicher in einem kleinen Fleckchen Sonne. Kotor hat sogar ein eigenes Katzenmuseum! <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

The alleys surprizingly sometimes open up into a plaza. This one is crowned by the cathedral Svetog Tripuna after wich the mountain rises.

Immer wieder \u00f6ffnen sich die Gassen und wir stehen auf tollen Pl\u00e4tzen. Hier gelangen wir an die Kathedrale Sankt Tryphon. Dahinter erheben sich die Berge. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

A few steps further we arrive at the Palata Prima, a palace of a rich family from the 14th century.

Ein paar Schritte weiter kommen wir an den Palata Pima. Der h\u00fcbsche Palast einer sehr reichen Familie stammt aus dem 14. Jh. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

Time for a snack! It’s nice to eat thru all the treats all these different countries have to offer.

Zeit f\u00fcr eine St\u00e4rkung! Es macht Spa\u00df, die Leckereien der B\u00e4ckereien verschiedener L\u00e4nder zu entdecken. <\/div> <\/div>

Well fed we make our way up the steep wall and get amazing views over the red roofs.

Gest\u00e4rkt starten wir unsere Wanderung auf die Stadtmauer hinauf und blicken \u00fcber die roten D\u00e4cher von Kotor. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

Half the way up the mountain towards the fort San Giovanni we come across this little church run by a few nuns.

Auf dem Weg nach oben zur Festung San Giovanni kommen wir an einer kleinen h\u00fcbschen Kapelle vorbei, in welcher wir Nonnen antreffen. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

What a splendid weather! And may great views!

Wir haben ein phantastisches Wetterchen und genie\u00dfen die spektakul\u00e4ren Blicke auf Kotor und die Bucht. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

After all the climbing we didn’t quite make it all the way to the fort. A small hole in the wall intrigues us (again) and we land outside the wall on a lesser trodded path.

Doch wir schaffen es nicht bis hinauf zur Festung, denn kurz vorher lockt uns dieses Loch durch die Stadtmauer auf einen weniger ausgetretenen Wanderweg. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

It’s a lot more fun not to head back the same way!

Es macht ja viel mehr Spa\u00df, nicht den gleichen Weg zur\u00fcck zu laufen! <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

This little church lies in an abandoned and destroyed town. However the church of St. John still stands.

Wir kommen vorbei an Ruinen einer Siedlung, aber die Kirche St. John steht noch. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

\"Wandering <\/a>
Wandering along the old terraces we come along a sign pointing us to the only house. “Home made cheese” it read. And again we fall off track and reach a house run by some old guys that tried to make our stay pleasant and made us a nice table. We decide to buy a bit of cheese but later regretted it and fed it to the cats. Well tastes are definetly different….

Entlang der alten Terassen wandern wir, bis uns ein Schild mit “selbstgemachtem K\u00e4se” erneut vom Weg abbringt. Wir landen in einer von \u00e4lteren Herren betriebenen Bergh\u00fctte, die uns sogleich einen angenehmen Aufenthalt bereiten wollen. Der Tisch wird gedeckt und K\u00e4se serviert. Wir nehmen schlie\u00dflich ein St\u00fcckchen K\u00e4se mit, welches sp\u00e4ter allerdings als Katzenfutter endet, weil… nunja Geschm\u00e4cker sind eben verschieden…. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>
