Montenegro takes us further to the Skadar lake. Our next destination invites us with the chance to see Dalmatian Pelicans. We wonder if they will be to few that we won’t be able to discover them. Anyway the Skadar lake is the largest fresh water lake of the Balkan region. It reaches over 48 km in length and 14 km in width. Two third of the lake lie on the side of Montenegro, the rest belongs to Albania. Montenegro decided to put its part 1983 under protection and is now a national park. Next to around 40 species of fish, 280 bird species call it their home. Thus the area is a top destination for ornithologists in Europe! Meanwhile several bird watching stations exist. Most of the lake is only around 5 to 9 m deep. In the summer the temperatures in the lake can reach up to 28 \u00b0C, no wonder. But still the lake doesn’t dry out. Instead it is spring fed from underground rivers. At first we visit the northern end of the lake with the local information center. We learn that it is almost impossible to meet the pelicans without a boat and that the boat rental is closed and that the tour boats don’t operate due to the lack of tourists during the winter. The chances to meet some of the 100 pelicans on this large lake have thus dwindled for us. But we don’t give up! See for yourself:<\/p>\n

In Montenegro entscheiden wir uns f\u00fcr den Skadar See als weiteres Reiseziel und zugegebenerma\u00dfen locken uns die seltenen Krauskopfpelikane. Ob sie wohl so selten sind, dass wir sie gar nicht erst zu Gesicht bekommen? Der Skadarsee ist jedenfalls der gr\u00f6\u00dfte S\u00fc\u00dfwassersee des Balkans, er erstreckt sich \u00fcber ungef\u00e4hr 48 km L\u00e4nge und 14 km Breite. Ungef\u00e4hr 2\/3 des Sees liegen in Montenegro, der Rest geh\u00f6rt zu Albanien. Der montenegrinische Teil des Sees wurde 1983 zum Natioanlpark erkl\u00e4rt. Neben etwa 40 Fischarten wurden hier bisher 280 Vogelarten gez\u00e4hlt, eine Topdestination f\u00fcr Ornithologen in Europa! Mittlerweile gibt es auch mehrere Vogelbeobachtungsstationen. An den meisten Stellen ist der See nur 5-9 Meter tief. Im Sommer steigt die Wassertemperatur auf bis zu 28 Grad Celsius an, kein Wunder bei der geringen Wassertiefe. Und dennoch trocknet der See nicht aus, ganz im Gegenteil, er wird unter anderem aus unterirdischen Quellen gespeist. Zun\u00e4chst besuchen wir ein im Norden des Sees gelegenes Infozentrum und erfahren, dass es eigentlich ziemlich unm\u00f6glich ist, die Pelikane ohne Boot zu sehen und dass der Bootsverleih im Winter eingestellt ist und Ausflugsboote aufgrund fehlender Touristen im Winter nicht unterwegs sind. Die Chance, einige der ungef\u00e4hr 100 Pelikane auf diesem gro\u00dfen sch\u00f6nen See zu entdecken, ist damit ziemlich gering, aber wir wollen es dennoch versuchen und lassen und nicht entmutigen. And this is how it looks our object of desire: A rare Dalmatian Pelican. We find this stuffed animal at the nice national park information center of Skader lake.

Und so sieht es aus, das Objekt unserer Begierde: ein seltener Krauskopfpelikan. Dieses pr\u00e4parierte Tier sehen wir in dem kleinen gut gemachten Infozentrum des Nationalparks Skadar See. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

And here it is at scale: The birdy shouldn’t be too hard to spot! Wingspan up to 3m!

The first impression of the lake doesn’t seem to be very national park like. We pass over this dam in the northern part of the park and it is lined with fishermen. They are catching large fish that are then promptly sold on the road behind them. The information center even sells fishing licences. But since the lake is known for its abundance of fish, we figure that it is well managed.

Der erste Eindruck vom See sieht erstmal gar nicht nach Nationalpark aus. Wir passieren diesen Damm im Norden des Sees und er ist voll besetzt mit Anglern, welche gro\u00dfe Fische rausziehen und an der Stra\u00dfe zum Verkauf anbieten. Angellizensen kann man im Infozentrum kaufen. Da der See aber f\u00fcr seinen Fischreichtum bekannt ist, vertrauen wir darauf, dass das hier gut gemanagt wird! <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

\"Skadar <\/a>
Skadar lake is very boggy on it’s NW side and therefor not that accessible. Here between the reeds lie the well protected nesting grounds of the pelican. Best seen by boat. But it’s not breeding season anyway.

Der Skadar See ist an der Nordwestseite sumpfig und schlecht zug\u00e4nglich. Hier versteckt im Schilf liegen die Brutpl\u00e4tze der Pelikane, am besten sind sie per Boot zu beobachten. Aber es ist ja sowieso grad keine Brutsaison…. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

The weather is getting overcast and darker, rain soon awaits us (little did we know how much). We enjoy the lake in a mystic atmosphere.

Das Wetter tr\u00fcbt sich langsam ein, Regen steht bevor (Noch sind wir unwissend, wie viel wir davon noch erleben werden!). Wir erleben den Skadar-See in einer besonders mystischen Stimmung. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

On the south coast of the lake the landscape is very different. The Rumija mountain range divides the lake from the Adriatic ocean. It’s only about 20 km wide but already 1600 m high!

An der S\u00fcdseite des Skadar Sees sieht die Landschaft ganz anders aus. Das Rumija-Gebirge trennt den See von der Adria, es sind nur ungef\u00e4hr 20 Kilometer zwischen See und Adria, aber daf\u00fcr sind diese bis zu 1600 Meter hoch! <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

We drive the “panoramic” road on the south side up in the mountains. Down at the lake there is no road. On this little island lie the ruins of an old fort. The fort of Grmo\u017eur is also called the Alcatraz of Montenegro in which non swimmers were held prisoners.

Wir fahren im S\u00fcden \u00fcber die Panorama-Stra\u00dfe durch die Berge hoch \u00fcber dem See. Am Ufer f\u00fchrt kein Weg entlang. Auf dieser kleinen Insel sind die Reste einer Festung erhalten. Das Fortress Grmo\u017eur wird auch als montenegrinisches Alkatraz beschrieben, in diesem Gef\u00e4ngnis wurden einst Nichtschwimmer inhaftiert. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

We only have eyes for the old fortress that is full of cormorants. The Skadar lake is home to the second largest population of the Pygmy Cormorant. But look again verrry closely…

Wir haben nur Augen f\u00fcr die ehemalige Festung, welche voller Kormorane war. Im Skadar See lebt die zweitgr\u00f6\u00dfte Kolonie von Pygm\u00e4enkormoranen. Aber…. Schaut mal ganz genau hin! <\/div> <\/div>

Only later on the PC we discover them while zooming in, yes Pelicans! From high up on the panorama road we couldn’t distinguish them. So in a way we did see our most wanted.

Sp\u00e4ter am PC, als wir ins Bild hineinzoomen, sehen wir – ja – Pelikane!!! Von hoch oben auf der Panoramastra\u00dfe konnten wir sich nicht erkennen. Also haben wir die hei\u00df ersehnten Pelikane doch irgendwie angetroffen, ohne sie jedoch wirklich gesehen zu haben… <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

In December the place is very deserted. Two men were out for fishing and just came back on their boat.

In the morning we hear a donkey calling early in the morning. After continuing our drive we meet the cute guy next to the road. And he’s happy to get a few cuddles from us.

The road takes us back to the coast to Utjeha and into Camp Oliva. Heavy weather is predicted so we plan ahead to have power for warmth, an internet connection and a warm shower.

Wir fahren schlie\u00dflich zur\u00fcck an die K\u00fcste nach Utjeha ins Camp Oliva, denn es werden mehrere Tage Sturm voraus gesagt, welche wir gern mit Strom f\u00fcr unsere Heizung, Internet und warmen Duschen verbringen wollen. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

The little camp is located just behind the beach under some really old olive trees! The storm blows some of the olives out of the trees, but the owners have laid out nets to collect the ripe olives. They make special olive oil from them.

Das kleine Camp liegt direkt an der K\u00fcste, die Stellpl\u00e4tze sind verteilt auf einem kleinen Olivenhain mit wahnsinnig alten B\u00e4umen! Der Sturm fegt die Oliven von den B\u00e4umen, es wurden gro\u00dffl\u00e4chig Netze darunter ausgelegt, um aus den Fr\u00fcchten Oliven\u00f6l pressen zu k\u00f6nnen. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

We spend three stormy days in camp and bear the weather while olives drop onto Ferdi’s roof. A funny clonking sound. We use the few minutes without rain to head over to the beach and the supermarket.

Drei Tage verharren wir im Camp und trotzen dem Sturm, w\u00e4hrend es Oliven auf den Ferdi regnet, ein interessantes Ger\u00e4usch… Klong! In den wenigen Minuten ohne Regen spazieren wir zum Supermarkt entlang der K\u00fcste und bestaunen die hohen Wellen. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

We’d love to go diving and the location would be perfect if not for the storm. The weather slowly drifts southward and we will follow it slowly towards Albania. A new country on our route!

Die Bedingungen zum Tauchen w\u00e4ren perfekt, denn das Camp Oliva liegt direkt am Meer. Aber der Sturm h\u00e4lt uns leider davon ab.
