There are many ways to enter Albania but by road must be the most exciting. Not in terms of things to see, although the masses of garbage on the side of the road are quite astonishing, but in terms of fear of life and death and culture shock. Driving in Albania needs getting used to. We are swetting and our eyes are constantly wide open! Pot holes jump out at any time and can swallow a car whole. The main 4 lane highway is used by everyone from multi ton trucks to playing kids! Nevertheless the CIA-style black SUVs used by the newly rich and also by the secret police wizz past us left and right at insane speeds even for a well maintained German autobahn. At the same time donkey carts or bicycles creep slowly on the sides, even towards the general direction of trafic. The only thing slower are the parking cars that pick up a (live) turkey-to-go or other farm produce from the old lady sitting in her sofa at a road side stand. Come join us in pouring rain as we slowly loose all our drive training knowledge and succumb to ignore every light or sign on the road \ud83d\ude09 Many of the following photos have been taken while driving so don’t expect them to be picture perfekt. But they still give a great impression of our albanien driving experience im letzten November.<\/p>\n

Es gibt verschiedene Wege, um nach Albanien einzureisen, aber als Autofahrer ist es wahrscheinlich am aufregendsten. Nicht weil es so viel zu sehen gibt, auch wenn der viele M\u00fcll am Stra\u00dfenrand schon erschreckend ist, sondern weil es gef\u00fchlt um Leben und Tod geht. Autofahren in Albanien ist f\u00fcr uns wie ein Kulturschock und daran muss man sich erstmal gew\u00f6hnen. Wir schwitzen und unsere vier Augen sind permanent auf die Stra\u00dfe gerichtet! Riesige Schlagl\u00f6cher tauchen aus dem Nichts auf und k\u00f6nnen das Auto verrecken lassen. Die Autobahn wird au\u00dferdem ausgiebig genutzt: Wir fahren gemeinsam mit gro\u00dfen LKWs, vorbei an spielenden Kindern. Nichtsdestotrotz rasen die schwarzen SUVs im CIA Look der Neureichen und der Geheimpolizei rechts und links an uns vorbei, und das in Geschwindigkeiten, welche selbst f\u00fcr eine gut ausgebaute deutsche Autobahn rasend schnell w\u00e4ren. Gleichzeitig schleichen am Rand Eselskarren und Fahrr\u00e4der, manchmal auch gegen die Fahrtrichtung. Langsamer sind nur noch parkende Autos, um vom Hirte hinter der Leitplanke einen lebenden Truthahn aus seiner Herde oder Gem\u00fcse von einem der zahlreichen St\u00e4nde von den auf Sofas sitzenden alten M\u00fctterchen zu kaufen. Seid dabei, wie wir in str\u00f6mendem Regen alles vergessen was wir jemals in der Fahrschule gelernt haben und Verkehrszeichen und Ampeln neu interpretieren \ud83d\ude09 Viele der folgenden Photos geh\u00f6ren nicht zur hohen Schule der Photographie, da wir sie aus dem fahrenden Auto heraus geschossen haben. Doch sie geben einen wunderbaren Einblick in unsere Erlebnisse “on the road” in Albanien last november.<\/p>\n

This lamp regulates the traffic at a narrow pass. Please choose a color! We did stop at a few red lights but the albanians just rushed past us and honked. After a few minutes we too drove on even though the light was red. The next times we started to ignore the red lights all together. Guess we’re getting used to a new culture!

Diese Ampel regelt den Verkehr an einer Engstelle, zu schmal f\u00fcr zwei Fahrzeuge… Bitte w\u00e4hle deine Farbe! Wir stehen au\u00dferdem an mehreren roten Ampeln, w\u00e4hrend andere albanische Fahrzeuge hupend an uns vorbeifahren. Nach mehreren Minuten Wartezeit fahren wir schlie\u00dflich auch bei rot, sp\u00e4ter sogar ohne Wartezeit. Anpassung an die vorherrschende Kultur? <\/div> <\/div>

Eine Schubkarre schiebt sich einfach leichter auf dem Asphalt der Autobahn als daneben im Kiesbett. Im Hintergrund steht eine weitere Person an der Mittelleitplanke. <\/div> <\/div>

This guy just wants to cross the road, with his bicycle. He just lifted it over the plank and then climbed after it. Not that he could use the walkways in the back.

Dieser Mann \u00fcberquert die Autobahn. Er hob grad sein Fahrrad \u00fcber die Mittelleitplanke und kletterte im n\u00e4chsten Augenblick hinterher. Es gibt ja auch keine Autobahnbr\u00fccke im Hintergrund zu sehen, die sicher benutzt werden k\u00f6nnte! <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

Manche Radfahrer machen sich die M\u00fche allerdings gar nicht erst, ihr Fahrrad auf die andere Seite zu bringen, sie fahren einfach entgegen der Fahrtrichtung auf der Autobahn. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

We had some heavy rain for the past days. Lots of rivers became flooded and streets become waterways. We get into our next adventure: an albanian traffic jam!

Es gibt seit mehreren Tagen starken Regen. Viele B\u00e4che und kleine Fl\u00fcsse traten \u00fcber ihre Ufer, Stra\u00dfen verwandeln sich in Wasserstra\u00dfen. Und wir gelangen ins n\u00e4chste Abenteuer: unser erster albanischer Stau! <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

The reason for the traffic jam was a car that fell into a large hole in the road. Under water there are many hidden holes in the road that can’t be seen.

Ursache des Staus ist ein Kleinwagen, der in einem riesigen Schlagloch landete. Unter dem Wasser sind die vielen Schlagl\u00f6cher trotz ihrer Gr\u00f6\u00dfe kaum und erst sp\u00e4t zu sehen. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

The other reason for the traffic jam was of course the behavior of the Albanian drivers. One doesn’t simply stand in line and wait until the traffic continues. No! One uses both sides of the road in at least three lanes to try and get bast the accident. Of course this happens in both directions incuding the hidden potholes! We waited several hourse for traffic to clear. Noone here has ever heard of a rescue lane.

Die andere Ursache f\u00fcr diesen Stau ist allerdings das Verhalten der Albaner im Stau. Man stellt sich nicht an und wartet, nein! Auf einer zweispurigen Stra\u00dfe wird versucht, in drei Spuren bis zum Unfall vorzufahren, um irgendwie vorbeizukommen. Wir standen da mehrere Stunden im Regen im Stau, nichts bewegte sich. Bei uns in Deutschland funktioniert die Rettungsgasse ja auch nicht immer, aber hier in Albanien hat leider noch niemand je davon geh\u00f6rt. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

Albaniens Norden ist im Gegensatz zum s\u00fcdlichen Landesteil eine recht flache Region, die durch den heftigen Regen der letzten Tage unter \u00dcberflutungen leidet. <\/div> <\/div>

Unfortunately there’s no end to the rain. The weather report sais even more rain for the next days. The rivers transport a lot of garbage as well and it is everywhere.

Es gibt leider noch keine Entwarnung, mehr Regen wird angesagt. Die Fl\u00fcsse transportieren auch jede Menge M\u00fcll, der \u00fcberall herumliegt. <\/div> <\/div>

Some of our destinations were unreachable. We wanted to go Flamingo hunting in this saline but all the roads there were closed.

Auch einige Ziele, die wir uns ausgesucht haben, k\u00f6nnen wir nicht erreichen. Wir wollen zum Beispiel hier bei dieser Saline wandern und Falmigos suchen gehen, aber die Zufahrtsstra\u00dfen sind gesperrt. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

We drive onwards and past the large salt mounds from the saline towards a camping ground. We get power but the whole country seems to be out of Internet. The owner translates the weather report in the radio, more rain! Even though we are behind the front, our trip will take us into it again.

Wir fahren weiter, vorbei an den Salzbergen bis zu einem Campingplatz. Strom funktioniert schon wieder, an Internet ist jedoch nicht mal zu denken. Die ganze Region ist ohne Internet. Der Campinhaber erstattet uns den Radio-Wetterbericht: Regen, Regen, Regen. Doch wir sind mittlerweile hinter der Regenfront und fahren ihr hinterher. <\/div> <\/div>

The highways are crowded with sightseeing people. Whole fammilies are up and about and climb the middle planks to get a better view at the flooding. Of course everybody is still driving as fast as usual.

Auf den Autobahnen bleibt es verr\u00fcckt. Ganze Familien sind auf den Beinen und blicken vom h\u00f6chsten Punkt der Autobahnbr\u00fccke, der Mittelleitplanke, auf die \u00dcberflutungen. Nat\u00fcrlich fahren trotzdem weiterhin alle schnell. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

The highways are often crossed by minor roads. We are not used to see traffic lights and crossways on a highway.

Die Autobahnen in Albanien werden auch regelm\u00e4\u00dfig von kleineren Stra\u00dfen gekreuzt. Es ist schwer, sich daran zu gew\u00f6hnen. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

In Albania thousands of bunkers and pillboxes still line the countryside. They are remains from the communist era and are now conquered by the wildlife.

There are many “ghost houses” because the properties are devoloped with a shell and then are sold that way.

Es gibt zahlreiche “Geisterh\u00e4user”, weil die Grundst\u00fccke oft mit Rohbau erschlossen und dann erst verkauft werden. <\/div> <\/div>

The north is very furtile. But next to modern plastic greenhouses old ones made from glass eke out a miserable existance. Unfortunately because unrecycled plastic foil is everywhere.

Der flache Norden ist sehr fruchtbar. Doch neben vielen modernen Plastikfolien-Gew\u00e4chsh\u00e4usern fristen die alten aus Glas ein trauriges Dasein. Leider, denn \u00fcberall flattern auch viele ausgediente Plastikfolien herum, die nicht entsorgt werden. <\/div> <\/div>

The northern part of Albania didn’t capture us very much and we just drive through hoping that it will become better again soon. Our new favorite food however has become the byrek that is available everywhere. The are filled puff pastries. Filled with spinach, minced meat, cheese or mushrooms. Yum!

Der Norden des Landes hat uns nicht gefesselt und wir fahren einfach durch, in der Hoffnung, dass es irgendwann sch\u00f6ner werden muss. Unser neues Lieblingsessen wird der Burek, den es \u00fcberall unterwegs zu kaufen gibt. Das sind gef\u00fcllte Bl\u00e4tterteigtaschen mit K\u00e4se oder Hackfleisch, Spinat oder Pilzen. Food in Albania is very nice and rather cheap. So our camping cooker had some time off. This waiter calls in cars to dine in the restaurant. He got us with roasted goat on a spit, yummy!

In Albanien kann man \u00fcbrigens sehr gut und g\u00fcnstig essen, da schmei\u00dfen wir den Campingkocher gar nicht erst an. Dieser Kellner steht an der Stra\u00dfe und h\u00e4lt vorbeikommende Autos an. Er umwarb uns mit Zicklein am Spie\u00df, k\u00f6stlich! <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>
