The end of the coastal panoramic road takes us to our next destination in Albania, the cultural heritage site Butrint. This ruin city lies nicely bedded between the Butrint-lake and the Mediterranean sea. These days it is covered in trees and a green oasis awaits us. We wander through a perfect combination of nature and history. The paths lead through many city walls, temples, wells, bath houses, theaters, gymnasium, villas and churches. The city lies at the strait of Korfu and was characterized by many different epochs that can still be seen in the ruins today: Founded by Greek antiquity, conquered by Rome, Byzantine, Osmans and Christians. These cultures all left their own distinctive mark in the architecture of the place. The excavations first took place in the 20th century and much is still hidden in the earth.<\/p>\n

We too took great care in finding and selecting our camping place for the night, because nothing beats a good nights sleep. After all the camping grounds that had no wifi in the past few days due to the flooding we now decide to save some money and just stand somewhere with the camper since it is not forbidden in this country. The place should be level, or rather just a bit tilted so no puddles of rain can form on the roof and then leak inside, and it should be solid ground so we don’t sink into the ground with our tires in the morning when we want to leave. In addition of course not next to a main road or under strong street lights. Then preferably with a nice scenery to wake up to in the mornings. We love choose the secluded side of a forest. But this time we thought we’ve found the perfect spot, however this night in Butrint developed into one of the most sleep deprived nights we had on the whole trip. We originally planned to stay two nights but decided otherwise the next day after our stay in butrint and headed on towards Greece. Am Ende der K\u00fcstenpanoramastra\u00dfe erreichen wir unser n\u00e4chstes Ziel im S\u00fcden Albaniens, die Weltkulturerbest\u00e4tte Butrint. Die zwischen Butrint-See und Mittelmeer h\u00fcbsch gelegene Ruinenstadt ist mittlerweile bewaldet und liegt in sattem Gr\u00fcn vor uns. In einer perfekten Kombination von Geschichte und Natur wandeln wir durch verschiedenste Reste von Stadtmauern, Tempeln, Brunnen, Badeh\u00e4usern, Theatern, Gymnasien, Stadtvillen und Kirchen. Gelegen an der Stra\u00dfe von Korfu, wurde Butrint \u00fcber viele verschiedene Epochen gepr\u00e4gt, deren \u00dcberreste heute noch in den Ruinen zu erkennen sind: Gegr\u00fcndet in der griechische Antike, erobert von den R\u00f6mern, Byzantinern, Osmanen und Christen, erlebte die Stadt eine wechselvolle Geschichte. Die Ausgrabungen begannen hingegen erst Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts, hier kann bestimmt noch viel gefunden und geforscht werden.<\/p>\n

Auch f\u00fcr unsere Suche nach geeigneten Camper-Schlafpl\u00e4tzen verwenden wir gern viel Zeit, denn nichts geht \u00fcber einen erholsamen Schlaf im Camper. Nachdem die bisher aufgesuchten Campingpl\u00e4tze in Albanien aufgrund der \u00dcberschwemmungen der letzten Tage alle kein WiFi mehr haben, entscheiden wir uns oft, frei zu stehen wo es uns gef\u00e4llt, was in Albanien nicht verboten ist. Mittlerweile sind wir sehr gut darin geworden, einen guten Camper-Schlafplatz zu finden. Eben sollte er sein oder besser ganz leicht schr\u00e4g, damit sich im Falle von Regen keine Pf\u00fctze auf dem Dach bildet, denn leider tropft es sonst manchmal im Camper. Der Untergrund des Stellplatzes sollte durch eventuellen Regen nicht aufweichen, damit wir beim Losfahren nicht stecken bleiben. Au\u00dferdem sollte der Platz nicht direkt an einer befahrenen Stra\u00dfe liegen und es sollte keine grelle Stra\u00dfenlampe in der N\u00e4he leuchten. Und nat\u00fcrlich sollte die Umgebung ansprechend sein, damit wir morgens gerne rausgucken. Am liebsten stehen wir irgendwo gesch\u00fctzt am Waldrand. Diesmal dachten wir, wir h\u00e4tten in Butrint ein gutes Schlafpl\u00e4tzchen gefunden, doch die Nacht in Butrint entwickelte sich zu einer der schlaflosesten N\u00e4chte, die wir im Camper \u00fcberhaupt hatten. Urspr\u00fcnglich wollten wir zwei N\u00e4chte bleiben, doch nach unserem Tagesauslug in Butrint fahren wir noch in der Nacht weiter, nach Griechenland. Lest selbst, wie es und ergangen ist und macht Euch ein Bild vom sch\u00f6nen Butrint, das wir nahezu ganz f\u00fcr uns allein hatten.<\/p>\n

Evening arrival. Butrint lies at the south of Albania nearly surrounded by the Butrint lake. The 2.2km long Vivari channel connects the lake with the Mediterranean Sea. After all the rain of the past days large parts of the plain bleow remain flooded.

Ankunft im Abendlicht. Butrint liegt im S\u00fcden Albaniens, fast v\u00f6llig umgeben vom Butrint-See. Der ca. 2km lange Vivari-Kanal verbindet den See mit dem Mittelmeer. Nach den starken Regenf\u00e4llen der letzten Tage sind auch Teile der Ebene \u00fcberflutet. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

Here we find a nice looking place for the night. From the Ferdi we get a nice view over the ocean and the greek island of Korfu lies on the horizon, everything seems perfect.

But in the middle of the night another car arrives. We can hear the doors slam and voices talking but noone is to be seen. Carefully we take watch for a while but then decide to go sleeping again. A sudden rainfall gets us up again but it gets even better!

Doch nachts kommt ein anderes Auto. Wir h\u00f6ren Autot\u00fcren, Stimmen, sehen jedoch niemanden. Vorsichtshalber beobachten wir den Wagen eine Weile, schlafen aber bald wieder ein. Ein Platzregen macht uns erneut wach. Doch es kommt noch besser! <\/div> <\/div>

At around 3 am yet another car arrives. This time it is filled with drunk youngsters that take it wheels spinning over the parking lot and slide the car in circles while pulling the handbreak and taking turns. They cheer themselves on and each one tries to get even closer to the Ferdi. However we stay put and decide not to disturb the lot of drunken boys. The next morning reviels the tire tracks that reach up to 0.5m to the Ferdi.

Gegen 3 Uhr f\u00e4hrt ein weiteres Fahrzeug auf den Parkplatz. Alkoholisierte Jugendliche lassen ihr Auto mit angezogener Handbremse schlittern und feuern sich gegenseitg an. Wer traut sich am n\u00e4chsten an unseren Ferdi heran? Wir steigen nicht aus, es sind deutlich zu viele betrunkene Typen. Am n\u00e4chsten Morgen sehen wir die Reifenspuren auf dem Asphalt. Bis auf 0,5 Meter reichen sie an unseren Ferdi heran. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

Nach dieser viel zu aufregenden Nacht braucht Dine mehr als einen Kaffee! Aus dem mysteri\u00f6sen grauen Kombi klettern dann auch zwei v\u00f6llig verschlafene Franzosen. Nachts wirkte das bedrohlicher\u2026.. <\/div> <\/div>

Then we are off to the ruin city of Butrint. In 1992 it was declared a world cultural heritage site and is now surrounded by the national park of Butrint.

Diese Fischreusen liegen im Vivari-Kanal zwischen Butrint-See und Mittelmeer und werden noch traditionell betrieben, auf der gesamten Kanalbreite. Kann da noch was lebend durch? The babtissery, just as the basilika, was built in the 6th century AD by christians. The floor is covered by well preserved mozaic. But unfortunately for us it was currently protected by a layer of sand. The ground water here often floods the ruins as well, because the sea level has risen quite a bit since Butrint has been founded.

Das Baptisterium wurde ebenso wie die Basilika von den Christen Anfang des 6. Jh. errichtet. Der Boden ist mit einem gut erhaltenen Mosaik verziert, doch zu dessen Schutz aber unserem Pech meist mit Sand bedeckt. Zudem dr\u00fcckt das Grundwasser in die Ausgrabungsstellen, denn der Meeresspiegel ist seit der Gr\u00fcndung Butrints gestiegen. <\/div> <\/div>

After this wonderful day in Butrint we want to head out of Albania and into Greece. Not another night at the far to lively parking lot! We also decide against the adventurous cable ferry at Butrint and head around the lake.

Nach diesem sch\u00f6nen Tag in Butrint wollen wir Albanien Richtung Griechenland verlassen, nicht noch eine aufregende Nacht mit quitschenden Reifen! Doch wir entscheiden uns gegen diese abentuerlich aussehende Kabelf\u00e4hre \u00fcber den Vivari-Kanal und fahren lieber noch einen Umweg um den See herum. <\/div> <\/div>
