First things first: The Vikos gorge is definitly a place we want to head back to one day! But let’s start from the beginning: We leave Butrint and Albania and head into Greece. The border crossing went well, the customs officer even had the chance to try out her German a bit. Then we said goodby in Greek, since a few greek phrases already come easy. Mark’s father highly recommended us to visit the Vikos gorge in the northern mountains of Greece. So thus our first destination is set. The more we drive away from the coast and into the mountains the further the temperature declines on our thermometer. After the temperature drops to single digits we simply avoid looking at it. Meanwhile darkness has fallen and we search for a place to stay. We find a little parking lot just sone kilometers from the gorge at the Moni Panagias monasteri near the river Voidomatis that has carved the spectacular gorge. The night gets even colder, but we still sleep warm under our thick sheets. The next morning we are up early and at 8:00 am while cooking coffee 4 vans full of young greek men pull up into the lot. What now? After a short talk we find out that they are from the local fire brigade. They want to excersize rescue maneuvers in the river, only their wetsuits were not that thick at all. What do they want to simulate? Freezing to death? At least that is what their facal expressions told us while some of them clinged to thier warm coffee mugs. We finished our coffee as well and drove off towards the Vikos gorge. <\/span>This gorge is the deepes gorge in the world defined by it’s ratio of width against depth. With only around 1100m width it drops almost vertically down to 900m depth! Mountains surround the edges and rise steeply from the river even higher on each side. This gorge is the center piece of the Vicos Aoos National Park and features excellent hiking trails. Even due to the rising tourism one can still find vultures, eagles, bears, wolves and wild cats in this area. So let’s dive right in \ud83d\ude42

Das Fazit vorneweg: Mit der Vikos-Schlucht haben wir einen Ort gefunden, den wir definitiv noch einmal aufsuchen werden! Aber der Reihe nach: Wir verlassen Butrint und Albanien Richtung Griechenland. Die Einreise in die EU gelingt ohne Probleme, die Grenzbeamtin freut sich sogar, ihre deutschen Sprachkenntnisse hervorzukramen. Wir verabschieden uns schlie\u00dflich auf griechisch, einige Redewendungen griechisch haben wir mittlerweile drauf. Nach eindringlicher Empfehlung von Marks Vater ist unser erstes griechisches Ziel die Vikos-Schucht in den Bergen Nordgriechenlands. Je weiter wir die K\u00fcste Richtung Berge verlassen, desto weiter sinkt die Temperaturanzeige unseres Thermometers. Als die Anzeige einstellig wird, vermeiden wir schlichtweg den Blick. Mittlerweile wird es dunkel und wir finden einem Schlafplatz einige Kilometer vor der Schlucht auf einem kleinen Parkplatz beim Klosters Moni Panagias nahe des Flusses Voidomatis, welcher die spektakul\u00e4re Vikos-Schlucht gegraben hat. Die Nacht wird richtig kalt, aber wir schlafen warm in unseren dicken Decken. Am n\u00e4chsten Morgen sind wir fr\u00fch wach und beim Kaffeekochen kurz nach 8:00 Uhr fahren vier Vans voll besetzt mit jungen M\u00e4nnern auf den kleinen Parkplatz. Was kommt nun? In einem kurzen Gespr\u00e4ch stellt sich heraus: Es handelt sich um die Feuerwehr, welche in nicht sonderlich dicken Neopren-Anz\u00fcgen Rettungs\u00fcbungen im Fluss durchf\u00fchren will. In dieser K\u00e4lte? – fragen wir. Genauso vorfreudig sehen die Gesichter der M\u00e4nner als Antwort aus und einige halten sich noch an ihren w\u00e4rmenden Kaffeebechern fest…. Auch wir kochen unseren Kaffee zu Ende und verkr\u00fcmeln uns dann mal lieber Richtung Vikos-Schlucht. <\/span>Diese Schlucht ist gemessen an der Relation zwischen Tiefe und Breite die tiefste <\/span>Schlucht der Welt. Bei nur 1100 Metern Breite ist sie stolze 900 Meter tief! Steile Bergh\u00e4nge ragen vom Fluss hinauf. Die Schlucht ist das Herz des Nationalparks Vikos-Aoos und bietet tolle Wanderm\u00f6glichkeiten. Und trotz wachsendem Tourismus gibt es hier noch Geier, Adler, B\u00e4ren, W\u00f6lfe und Wildkatzen. Also nichts wie rein ins Get\u00fcmmel \ud83d\ude42<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally we reach the river that has carved this world wonder in stone. Currently it has so much water in it that we can’t cross the river as planned.

Schlie\u00dflich kommen wir am Fluss an, welcher die Schlucht in Stein gegraben hat. Momentan f\u00fchrt er zu viel eiskaltes Wasser, so dass wir den Fluss nicht kreuzen k\u00f6nnen. <\/div> <\/div>

The entire valley is 12km long. We didn’t want to walk the whole distance since it still gets dark very early. But now we have to turn around early anyway.

Die Schlucht ist 12 km lang. Wir wollten nicht die gesamte Strecke gehen, da es fr\u00fch dunkel wird, doch nun wandern wir fr\u00fcher zur\u00fcck als geplant. <\/div> <\/div>

This was a fortunate event since we discover the mountain town in the best of lights during sunset. After the sun is hidden behind the mountain we even get some snow and decide for a hot chocolate in a caffee next to the fireplace.

Zum Gl\u00fcck, denn auf dem R\u00fcckweg erleben wir das Bergdorf in sch\u00f6nster Abendsonne und danach beginnt es tats\u00e4chlich noch zu schneien und wir genie\u00dfen in einem Caf\u00e9 hei\u00dfe Schokolade am Kachelofen. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

We wander through the small idyllic paths through the town. We started to think about taking a room for the night to flee from the cold, but apparently most apartments here are more of the luxury kind.

Wir spazieren durch die kleinen idyllischen Gassen des Bergdorfes. Wir \u00fcberlegen kurz, ob wir uns ein Zimmer nehmen, um der K\u00e4lte zu entfliehen. Doch erstaunlicherweise gibt es hier eher luxuri\u00f6se Appartements. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

Instead of an expensive room we rather go out for some nice greek food next to a warm open fireplace at the restaurant Aris (definitly recommended!) in Megalo Papingo. Filled and warm we lightheadedly return to our camping spot at the monastery.

Satt und aufgew\u00e4rmt entscheiden wir uns tollk\u00fchn zu einer weiteren Nacht auf unserem bew\u00e4hrten Schlafplatz am Kloster. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

The next night however turned out to be even colder than the last. When we got up in the morning our thermometer showed -5\u00b0C, inside! That’s MINUS FIVE! Our Ferdi unfortunately only has a non functioning heater and is not well isolated. So it’s off to ice scraping for us, outside AND inside! But our compassion goes out to the fire brigade that showed up once again on the parking lot, same time as yesterday and went directly into the freezing river for rescue maneuvers.

Die folgende Nacht sollte allerdings noch k\u00e4lter werden. Als wir morgens aufwachen, zeigt das Thermometer -5\u00b0C an. In Worten: MINUS F\u00dcNF. Da unser Ferdi leider nur eine defekte Standheizung hat und zudem nicht ged\u00e4mmt ist, kratzen wir also morgens das Eis von au\u00dfen und von innen von den Scheiben. Doch unser Mitleid geht stattdessen erneut an die Feuerwehr, welche zur selben Zeit wie am Vortag auf dem Parkplatz f\u00fcr Ihre Rettungs\u00fcbungen im Fluss einr\u00fcckt. <\/div> <\/div>

Dispite the cold it was very warm under our bed sheets and after a long walk one sleeps well anyway. As Dine awoke, not much could be seen of the groundhog Mark.

Trotz K\u00e4lte war es unter unseren Decken aber doch erstaunlich warm und nach einer langen Tageswanderung schl\u00e4ft es sich sowieso gut. Als Dine morgens erwachte, war von Murmeltier Mark nicht viel zu sehen. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

We use the next day to visit more scenic points around the gorge and the region and undertake a few shorter walks along the way to visit some of the highlights.

When the thermometer reached acceptable levels we took the chance to dry out our sheets in the sun and have some breakfast.

Amazing! We are a little undecided if we should stay a bit longer. We still want to see so much more but also the thought of a little more warmth lures us. After all, we are not well equipped for these cold temperatures. But one day we will be back!

Traumhaft, oder? Wir sind hin und hergerissen. Eigentlich wollen wir noch mehr sehen und wandern, aber gleichzeitig zieht es uns auch zur\u00fcck in die W\u00e4rme. The camping place at Ioannina directly at the lake is unfortunately closed, so we head directly for the coast. After a long drive we are rewarded with this great spot and hot showers.

Der Campingplatz in Ioannina direkt am See hat leider geschlossen, so dass wir weiter direkt an die K\u00fcste fahren und f\u00fcr die lange Fahrt mit diesem grandiosen Stellplatz und hei\u00dfen Duschen belohnt wurden! <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

But the beach wasn’t so inviting after we peered behind the beach wall and the ocean was still too turbulent for diving.

Leider sah der Strand unterhalb der Mauer dann gar nicht so nett aus und das Meer war immer noch viel zu tr\u00fcb zum Tauchen. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

However we get a nice view from the camper and just ignore the dirty beach for a while. Much to our luck the camping place owned a small dog that barked at our camper the whole night long! We didn’t manage to calm him down and head onwards straight after breakfast. After all, there are more nice places to be found!

Doch vom Camper aus haben wir diesen wunderbaren Blick und ignorieren der schmutzigen Strand einfach f\u00fcr eine Weile. Leider wohnt auf dem Campingplatz ein kleiner Hund, der des Nachts unseren Camper anklefft. Wir schaffen es nicht, ihn ruhig zu stellen, so dass wir nach dem Fr\u00fchst\u00fcck weiter ziehen.
