The next stop lies in the south of the pelepones! But we’re not in a hurry, because it’s finally warm again on the coast. It’s the beginning of december and for Christmas we want to be on the island of Andros. So we can still take our time and enjoy Greece a bit more. We drive on the slower country roads and take stops where ever we like it or take detours where signs point to interesting sights. We discover historical excavation sites, pretty towns and pic a few oranges on the way and just enjoy our time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally we reach the Golf of Kortinth and reach the Peloponnes by the huge Rio-Andirro-Bridge. There are endless ammounts of historic sights on the peleponnes and our first goal is the historic site of Olympia! It’s the birthplace of the world famous Olympic games. But originally it’s a gigantic religious site in order to worship the gods. First of all the mightiest god in Greek mythology, Zeus. Even today we initiate the olympic games by lighting the olympic fire at this site and bringing it to the host country. Interestingly we learn that the Nazis reintrodued this old tradition to the olypic games. Originally the fire was carried by torchbearers from the historic site in order to grant the athetes a safe passage to Olympia. <\/span>In the summer games of 1937 in Berlin the fire was once again carried from Olympia to Berlin by runners over the course of 12 days.<\/span><\/p>\n

At this historic place it becomes clear that Olympia is far more than just a sport event. The olympic idea stands for sports, internationalism and fairness for over 4000 year. During the olympic games the participating countries originally remained at peace for the duration of the games. A great idea! Why couldn’t Olympia be everywhere and all the time??<\/span><\/p>\n

Es geht weiter Richtung S\u00fcden mit dem Ziel Peloponnes! Doch wir haben es nicht mehr eilig, denn an der K\u00fcste ist es endlich wieder warm. Wir haben Anfang Dezember, an Weihnachten wollen wir auf der Insel Andros ankommen. Also genie\u00dfen wir alle Zeit der Welt. Wir fahren Landstra\u00dfen, halten an, wo es sch\u00f6n ist oder Hinweisschilder etwas Interessantes verlauten lassen. Wir entdecken historische Grabungsst\u00e4tten am Weg, gem\u00fctliche Ortschaften, mopsen reife Orangen von den B\u00e4umen und genie\u00dfen die Zeit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Schlie\u00dflich erreichen wir den Golf von Corinth und erreichen den Peloponnes \u00fcber die gro\u00dfe Rio-Andirrio-Br\u00fccke. Der Peloponnes hat unendlich viele Sehensw\u00fcrdigkeiten zu bieten und unser erstes Ziel ist die antike St\u00e4tte Olympia! Sie ist der Geburtsort der weltbekannten olympischen Spiele, in ihrer Entstehung aber vor allem eine gigantische St\u00e4tte zum Gedenken an die G\u00f6tter, allen voran Zeus, dem m\u00e4chtigsten aller G\u00f6tter in der griechischen Mythologie. Noch heute wird hier in Olympia alle vier Jahre die olympische Flamme entz\u00fcndet und ins Gastgeberland getragen. Interessanterweise lernen wir, dass es ausgerechnet unter der Herrschaft der Nationalsozialisten zu einer Wiederbelebung dieser alten Tradition um die olympische Fackel kam. Urspr\u00fcnglich wurde das olympische Feuer von den Fackell\u00e4ufern aus Olympia heraus getragen, um den Athleten eine gefahrenlose Anreise zu erm\u00f6glichen. Zu den Sommerspielen 1936 in Berlin wurde die in Olympia entz\u00fcndete Flamme erstmals wieder von unz\u00e4hligen L\u00e4ufern in zw\u00f6lf Tagen von Olympia nach Berlin getragen.<\/span><\/p>\n

An diesem historischen Ort wird klar, dass Olympia viel mehr ist als ein Sportereignis! Der olympische Gedanke steht seit \u00fcber 4000 Jahren f\u00fcr Sportlichkeit, Internationalit\u00e4t und Fairness. W\u00e4hrend des olympischen Friedens lassen Staaten ihre Konflikte und Ungereimtheiten f\u00fcr ein sportliches Ereignis ruhen. Eine tolle Idee! K\u00f6nnte nicht immer und \u00fcberall Olympia sein??<\/span><\/p>\n

The carekeepers of the site have 4 legs and keep the vegetation short.

Die Denkmalpfleger haben hier vier Beine und halten die Vegetaion kurz. <\/div> <\/div>

\"A <\/a>
A small theater lies in the middle of the settlement. In the background you can make out the sculpture of Zalongo on the mountaintop. It reminds of the collective suicide in 1803 when Greek women on the run from the osmanic ruler Ali Pasha tossed themselves into the depths while dancing hand in hand with thier children. They wanted to rather die than be oppressed.

Ein kleines antikes Theater lag mitten in der Siedlung. Im Hintergrund steht die Skulptur von Zalongo auf der Bergspitze. Sie erinnert an einen Massen Selbstmord aus dem Jahr 1803, als griechische Frauen auf der Flucht vor den Osmanen um Ali Pasha mit ihren Kindern tanzend in den Abgrund sprangen. Sie wollten lieber sterben, als unterdr\u00fcckt zu leben. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

High above the city lies an even bigger theater that was currently excavated and rebuilt. We watch a while as a few people try to figgure out where each rock goes in this gigantic 3d puzzle.

Hoch \u00fcber der alten Stadt gibt es sogar ein noch viel gr\u00f6\u00dferes antikes Theater, an welchem aktuell Rekonstruktionsarbeiten stattfinden. Wir beobachten eine Weile, wie eine handvoll Menschen in einem gigantischen 3D-Puzzle motiviert Steine hin und her drehen. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

We have a look at the city Arta with it’s historic and famous stone bridge over the river Arachthos. The 4 arches are 130m long in total.

We learn that the bridge collapsed over night again and again after it was built and that the achitect had to make a grave offering to the gods: He needed to sacrifice his wife by cementing her alive into the foundations of the bridge to give it stability.

When we chose to drive the highway (in Greece with tolls) it often looks like this: For the Olympics 2004 the Greek have built many new highways, that our Navigation computer doesn’t know.

Wenn wir dann mal Autobahn fahren (in Griechenland mit Maut), dann sieht es oft so aus: Denn seit den olympischen Spielen in Athen 2004 gibt es in Griechenland viele neue Autobahnen, die unser Navi oft noch nicht kennt und wir fahren quasi durchs Blaue. <\/div> <\/div>

Around Olympia there is a lot of agriculture on the wide plains. First of all are olive and citrus groves. We’re here at the peak of the harvest season and the olives are transported by the bag full.

The next day our tour starts: We first have a look at the excellent Archaeological Museum of Olympia and then head down to the historic olympic site with all our newly gained knowledge. This order is highly recommended to make more sense of the ruins.

Am n\u00e4chsten Tag geht\u2019s los: Wir besichtigen zuerst das exzellente Arch\u00e4ologische Museum zu Olympia und st\u00fcrzen uns danach mit all unserem erworbenem Wissen in die historische St\u00e4tte. The museum exhibits many found relics from the olympic town and the found sacrifices that were made for Zeus and Hera and explains their background.

By the way: The tight ass belongs to Hermes, the messenger of the gods. He carries the young Dionysos on his arm, the future god of wine. In his other arm (unfortunately broken) Hermes holds a grape vine that the little Dyonissos already craves for.

This stadium was the site of the first olympic games in 776 bc. We stand on the start line and can feel the spirit of olympia. In the back one can make out the podium for the judges. The stadium has room for 45000 viewers.

These days Olympia is a wonderful park. A few areas are fenced off and even if noone can be seen and we sneak a peak a whistle sounds from afar. Might sound a bit sporty in a place like this but it’s a warning from the guards. Dine must suggest a whistle to be standard equipment at the museum back home \ud83d\ude42

Das alte Olympia ist heute ein wundersch\u00f6ner Park. Einige Bereiche sind abgesperrt. Und auch wenn niemand zu sehen ist und wir einen klitzekleinen untersagten Blick riskieren wollen, ert\u00f6nt sofort von irgendwoher eine Trillerpfeife.
