We are back at the boat since several days now and the Lizzy has survived the winter quite well. We were very busy the last day to prepare the Lizzy for sailing once more. There was a lot to do! The hull coating hat to be repaired in several spots and a new antifouling painted on the entire hull. We raised the mast back up again and put on her nice sails. Many things had to be replaced, renewed or repaired. A lot still results from Lizzy being neglected several years by her previous owner. And on top of all that we had a visitor on board: What would you do if you heard your partner on the toilet saying “Oh, hello little guy, who are you?” See for yourself:<\/p>\n

Wir sind seit einigen Tagen zur\u00fcck am Boot und die Lizzy hat den Winter gut \u00fcberstanden! Wir haben die letzte Tage sehr flei\u00dfig daran gearbeitet, die Lizzy segelklar zu machen. Es gab viel zu tun! Wir haben das Unterwasserschiff ausgebessert und mit neuem Antifouling versehen, den Mast wieder gestellt und die Segel aufgezogen. Und wie das so ist, wenn man ein altes Boot hat, das einige Jahre wenig Pflege vom Vorbesitzer bekommen hat: Wir haben auch mal wieder einige Dinge erneuert, ersetzt oder repariert. Und dann kam pl\u00f6tzlich auch noch unerwarteter Besuch: Was w\u00fcrdet ihr tun, wenn euer Partner auf dem Klo pl\u00f6tzlich sagt: \u201eNa hallo, wer bist du denn?\u201c Seht selbst:<\/p>\n

No ladder, no problem!

\"Then <\/a>
Then the time comes! The 8 ton Lizzy is lifted by the crane and flies light as a feather across the yard. Dine makes sure that the last spots on the keel get a fresh coat of antifoul paint. Quickly, since it’s not a nice feeling standing under this big load.

Irgendwann ist es soweit, der gro\u00dfe Kran kommt und hebt die 8 Tonnen schwere Lizzy hoch wie eine Feder. Dine macht die letzten Pinselstriche unter den Kielen auf die Stellen, auf denen die Lizzy stand. Gaaaanz schnell, denn unter dieser Last arbeitet es sich so naja….. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

Annnd she floats!!! Mark has replaced our throughhull and it seems to hold.

Und sie schwimmt!!! Mark hat ein neues Kloventil ersetzt und es ist dicht! <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

Then we wait for a wind still day to put up the mast. Luckly we marked everything last year and know where to attach everything again. Mark has to climb to the top to adjust the windex.

Dann warten wir auf einen windarmen Tag, um unseren Mast zu stellen. Zum Gl\u00fcck haben wir letztes Jahr alles gut markiert und alles hat seinen Platz wieder gefunden. Mark muss dann noch mal nach oben, weil der Windanzeiger verrutscht ist. <\/div> <\/div>

But we get a nice view from the top once more.

Daf\u00fcr bekommt er eine gute Aussicht und wir sehen die Lizzy mal wieder von oben. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

After the work is done we can enjoy our sundowner.

The sails are still missing to complete a “sail-boat”. So Dine repairs a few holes and gives the Genua a new leading edge.

Dann fehlen noch die Segel f\u00fcr ein richtiges Segelboot. Dine bessert kleinere L\u00f6cher aus und hier gibt sie der Genua die (neue) Kante \ud83d\ude42 <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

\"Meanwhile <\/a>
Meanwhile Mark is building a new distribution pannel for the V-berth.

Mark baut und verkabelt derweil ein neues Strompanel f\u00fcr unsere Vorderkoje. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

\"It's <\/a>
It’s windstill once more and we can pull up the sails.

Dann ist es wieder mal windstill und nix wie rauf mit den Segeln. Yeah! <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

And then we get a visitor. Mark shouts from the bathroom: “Hello little guy, who are you?” At first we thought is was a Needlefish, but after a closer look it was a small Eel that found it’s way into the toilet.

Und dann kommt da ja pl\u00f6tzlich noch unerwarteter Besuch! Mark fragt im Bad: Na hallo, wer bist du denn? Zuerst dachten wir an eine Seenadel, aber nein, es ist ein kleiner Aal, den den Weg in unser Bordklo gefunden hat! <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

\"Of <\/a>
Of course we took care of it immediately and rescued the Eel from our toilet since it probably would not have survived pumping out the toilet. Mark sucked him up with a translucent hose, quite daring. And then we put him in a bucket with fresh water.

Wir haben nat\u00fcrlich ganz schnell gehandelt und den Aal aus dem Klo gerettet, denn heruntersp\u00fclen h\u00e4tte der kleine wohl nicht \u00fcberlebt. Mark war so mutig und hat den Aal mit einem dicken durchsichtigen Schlauch abgesaugt in den Eimer. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

Isn’t he cute? Especially considering that he survived a long journey all the way from the Sargasso sea across the Atlantic!

Ist der nicht niedlich? Vor allem, wenn man bedenkt, wie weit der schon gekommen ist. Die Laichgebiete des Aals liegen in der Sargassosee weit weit weg im Atlantik. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

The young Eels travel up stream and then return to the breeding grounds in the Atlantic as adults.

Die jungen Aale ziehen dann in die Fl\u00fcsse, um sp\u00e4ter als ausgewachsener Aal erneut in die Laichgebiete in den Atlantik zu schwimmen. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

We return him safely back to the sea. Have a long life little Eel!
