Onwards on our Peloponnes Tour! Our road leads us through endless olive groves around Kalamata, through a mountain panorama, through Sparta and finally to the historical site of Mystras. This last stronghold of the Byzantine Empire is held as the most important historical site on the Peloponnes, but being winter there is not much going on and we can rest for the night on one of the empty parking lots in front of the entrance.
\nToday Mystras is a ruin city that lies on a mountain slope. The old fortress crowns the top of the mountain above the city. The vast ruins around it make the extent of the ancient city visible. Visitors are welcomed at two entrances, one at the top near the fortress and one near the bottom for the ancient city. The lady at the ticket booth told us twice that it’s best to visit the lower city and then take our car to the top and have a look at the rest. We wonder why, since there are nice paths everywhere and our hiking boots are already tied. So we head up the mountain on foot dispite the recommendation. When we reached the upper gate the other lady at the entrance was bewondered and asked us if we came all the way up here on foot. Must fall into the category \u201etypically greek\u201c we think, since hiking for fun here in Greece does not yet belong a normal way of life. Strange enough since we are only 7km away from the birthplace of the ultimative marathon: The Spartathlon! The Messenger Pheidippides ran a total of 246km all the way from Athens to Sparta all in just one day to ask the Spartans to join the battle of Marathon against the Persian empire. Todays record for this annual insane long run lies at 20 hours and 25 minutes!<\/p>\n

Weiter geht es auf unserer Peloponnes-Tour! Wir fahren durch schier unendliche Olivenhaine rings um Kalamata, durch tolles Bergpanorama weiter nach Sparta und schlie\u00dflich zur Weltkulturerbest\u00e4tte Mystras. Diese letzte Hochburg des Byzantinischen Reiches wird als eine der bedeutendsten historischen St\u00e4tten auf dem Peloponnes gehandelt, doch dank Nebensaison ist kaum etwas los und wir k\u00f6nnen auch unser Nachtlager auf einem der leeren Parkpl\u00e4tze vor dem Touristenmagnet aufschlagen.<\/p>\n

Mystras ist heute eine Ruinenstadt, die sich \u00fcber einen ausgedehnten Hang erstreckt. Auf der Bergspitze thronte die alte Festung \u00fcber der Stadt, die Ruinen lassen noch die Ausma\u00dfe erahnen. F\u00fcr die Besucher gibt es zwei Einl\u00e4sse in die Ruinenstadt: Einer liegt oben f\u00fcr die Festung und der andere weiter unten f\u00fcr die Siedlung. Mehrfach wurde uns von der Kassiererin am Einlass mitgeteilt, dass wir am besten mit dem Auto von unteren zum oberen Einlass fahren sollten. Wir wundern uns, denn es gibt doch so tolle Wege durch die Ruinenstadt und unsere Wanderschuhe sind auch schon geschn\u00fcrt. Also erklimmen wir entgegen aller Empfehlungen den Gipfel per pedes. Als wir den oberen Einlass passieren, werden wir ungl\u00e4ubig gefragt, ob wir etwa zu Fu\u00df sind. Das geh\u00f6rt mit in die Liste \u201etypisch griechisch\u201c: Wandern ist hier als Freizeitsport erst noch im Kommen \ud83d\ude42 Und das, obwohl im nur 7km entfernten Sparta der Ursprung des ultimativen Marathons liegt: der Spartathlon. Der Bote Pheidippides lief einst die 246 km von Athen nach Sparta an nur einem Tag, um die Spartakianer um Unterst\u00fctzung im Krieg von Marathon gegen die Perser zu bitten. Der heutige Rekord der j\u00e4hrlich stattfindenden Spartathlons liegt \u00fcbrigens bei 20h 25min.!<\/p>\n

The stable rain season in winter and the sun in summer provide the perfect conditions for the black Kalamata-Olives!

Im S\u00fcden des Peloponnes gibt es ziemlich verl\u00e4sslich im Winter Regen und im Sommer W\u00e4rme, perfekt f\u00fcr die beliebten schwarzen Kalamata-Oliven! <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

In contrast to other Olives the Kalamata is not harvested green, but left on the tree untill it gets ripe in November and is then hand picked.

Im Gegensatz zu anderen Oliven kann die Kalamata nicht gr\u00fcn geerntet werden. Sie reift bis in den sp\u00e4ten November an den B\u00e4umen und wird dann per Hand gepl\u00fcckt. <\/div> <\/div>

\"The <\/a>
The road between Kalamata and Sparta runs over – or rather through – a mountain range and is very impressive. Today there is not much left of ancient Sparta itsself, probably due to Sparta not having a city wall. After all they were tough warriors who didn’t need one, right?

Die Stra\u00dfe zwischen Kalamata und Sparta f\u00fchrt \u00fcber \u2013 oder hier durch \u2013 die Berge und ist sehr eindrucksvoll. Von Sparta selbst ist leider wenig historische Substanz erhalten, was daran liegen k\u00f6nnte, dass Sparta keine Stadtmauern zur Verteidigung besa\u00df. Sie waren ja schlie\u00dflich tapfere Krieger! <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

The Langada Gorge lies on the way. This is where all the young boys were thrown into or abandoned that were deemed too weak or deformed and couldn’t become good warriors. Our mental to-do list gets another point: Watch the film \u201e300\u201c to learn more about Spartians.

Auf dem Weg liegt auch die Langada Schlucht. Hier wurden all die Jungen von Sparta ausgesetzt, welche zu schwach oder zu missgebildet waren, um gute Krieger zu werden. Unsere mentale To-do Liste bekommt einen weiteren Eintrag: Den Film \u201e300\u201c gucken, um mehr \u00fcber die Spartakianer zu erfahren. <\/div> <\/div>

After all the miles we drove through the olives , it was time to visit the Olive Museum in Sparta. The museum had a great design and was very informative about everything Olive. Not just how the olive is cultivated and made into olive oil but also what the olive means in terms of culture, history, industry and how it was also used for kosmetics and rituals. We highly recommend this museum!

Nach all den geschrubbten Kilometern zwischen Bergen und Olivenb\u00e4umen besichtigen wir in Sparta das Oliven-Museum. Das Museum hat ein sehr gutes Design und informiert \u00fcber die Olive auf ganzer Breite: Nicht nur der Anbau und die \u00d6lgewinnung, sondern im gro\u00dfen Bogen die Bedeutung der Olive f\u00fcr Ern\u00e4hrung, Kosmetik, Treibstoff, Wirtschaft und auch welche Rituale es rund um die Olive gibt und gab. Most of the ruins are accessable and in every church someone is standing guard.

Mystras was a center for knowlege, art and architecture. Many of the freskoes still remind us of this today.

This great palace was undergoing renovations and thus closed on our visit.

Dieser gro\u00dfe Palast war zum Zeitpunkt unseres Besuches leider wegen Restaurierungsarbeiten f\u00fcr die Besucher geschlossen. <\/div> <\/div>

From 1950 up until today a lot has been excavated and restored. 1989 Mystras was declared a world cultural heritage site. Still they have to do a lot, especially in therms of information. There are some old information signs around the place but unfortunately without much info, and often very repedative.

Seit 1950 bis heute wird viel restauriert. 1989 wurde Mystras als Weltkulturerbest\u00e4tte aufgenommen. Nachholebedarf besteht allerdings noch an der Bereitstellung von Informationen. Zwar gibt es einige heruntergekommene Tafeln, aber leider ohne gro\u00dfen inhaltlichen Wert und oft sogar doppelt und dreifach vorhanden. <\/div> <\/div>

Many people from the surrounding area once moved into the bustling city and even during the fall of the Byzantine Empire Mystras was floureshing. As we walk through the old streets we wonder what it once must have been like, how the city looked and what life was like here.

Viele Menschen aus dem Umland zogen einst nach Mystras und w\u00e4hrend das Byzantinische Reich langsam unterging, erlebte Mystras noch einen Aufschwung. Beim Flanieren durch die Ruinenstadt stellen wir uns vor, wie die Stadt und das Leben hier wohl einst aussahen. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

We learn that the downfall began 1715 when mystras was conquered by the Turks. A field of ruins that prevailed vor many years was left behind.

Wir erfahren, dass der Abw\u00e4rtstrend aus Zerst\u00f6rngen 1715 begann, als Mystras von den T\u00fcrken erobert wurde. \u00dcbrig blieb nur ein f\u00fcr viele viele Jahre verlassenes Ruinenfeld. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

The many churches and monasteries are still in relative good shape, however the normal town houses are much in ruins today.

The monastery Pantanassa (here the view from inside) is still inhabited by nuns. Apart from the many stray cats the nuns are the only inhabitants still living within the ancient city.

Das Kloster Pantanassa (hier der Ausblick vom Kloster) ist allerdings immernoch von Nonnen bewohnt! Wenn man von den zahlreichen Streunerkatzen absieht, sind diese Nonnen somit die einzigen Bewohner von Mystras. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

We make it up to the fortress that was built in 1249. And beween the ruins at the top we have our little picnic.

Wir schaffen es bis zur Festung, welche 1249 entstand. Zwischen den Ruinen gibt es unser Gipfel-Picknick. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

Even though there are no tourists about we are not allone! It seems our picnic has become public.

Zwar sind keine anderen Touris weit und breit zu sehen, und doch sind wir nicht allein! Das Picknick hat sich wohl herumgesprochen. <\/div> <\/div>

On the way down one usually gets a different perspective on things. The ruin city is like a park.

Auf dem Weg nach unten sieht dann ja bekanntlich alles nochmal ganz anders aus. Die Ruinenstadt ist herrlich bewaldet und zum Park geworden. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div>
