Slovenia’s ocean gardens! –

Solveniens Garten am Meer

On the rather short coast of Solvenia lies the peninsular of Strunjan. We visit a functioning salina and have a look at the local exhibition about salt production and the diverse fauna and flora of the area. The salt is harvested in summer, so now in winter time it’s a prime bird sanctuary and we can discover several of them wadding in the shallows. Our path takes us along the coast around the peninsular and after some really cold days in the mointains we can enjoy a bit warmer weather and the sun’s rays. The wind is still strong and blows cold air down from the snow covered mountains in the distance. But we don’t care since it’s not raining for a change. Many fruits and vegitables grow in the mild climate. Many of which are only found in the supermarkets in Germany. An Sloweniens kurzer Küste liegt auch die schöne Halbinsel Strunjan. Wir besichtigen die noch betriebene Meerwassersaline inklusive einer kleinen, aber feinen Ausstellung über die Salzgewinnung sowie über die Fauna und Flora vor Ort. Das Salz wird im Sommer geerntet, jetzt im Winter rasten in den Gewässern der Saline zahlreiche Vogelarten. Einige können wir auch beobachten, nachdem der Reisebus mit Senioren abgelegt hat und wieder Ruhe einkehrt. Wir wandern anschließend auf einen Rundweg über die Halbinsel Strunjan und erleben nach den ziemlich kühlen Tagen in den Bergen endlich Mittelmeerklima. Es ist zwar sehr stürmisch und der Wind kommt kalt aus den Bergen, aber das ist uns egal, denn es regnet nicht. In diesem angenehmen Mittelmeerklima wachsen auch viele Obst- und Gemüsesorten, welche wir in Deutschland nur aus dem Supermarkt kennen. In den einzelnen Feldern der Saline verdunstet das Meerwasser in der Sonne. Das Salz bleibt zurück und kann im Sommer geerntet werden.

The houses incorporate a small museum displaying all the need to now facts on a salina.

Die Häuschen beinhalten eine kleine sehenswerte Ausstellung über die Salzgewinnung der Saline.

Many small boats lie along the coast at mooring bouys. However the large ones in the distance are aquaculture farms for mussels and oysters.

Vor der Küste liegen einige Segelboote vor Anker. Die vielen bunten Bojen im Hintergrund sind Aquakulturen von Austern. Nun wundern wir uns nicht mehr über die vielen Austerschalen am Strand.

Am Strand haben wir einen schönen Blick auf Piran und die Austern-Bojen.

Ouch! At the café we learn that the boat ripped off it’s mooring two days ago and beached itself on the rocks. Luckly not our Lizzy.

Autsch! Im Strandcafé erfahren wir, dass das Boot vor zwei Tagen gestrandet ist. Es lag vor Anker bzw. an einer Ankerboje. Auch wenn die Farben passen könnten: Es ist zum Glück nicht unsere Lizzy!

It’s still very windy, but sunny!

Es ist immernoch richtig stürmisch, aber sonnig!

Stratified rocks!

Stein in Schichten.

We climb down the steps leading to the bottom of the steep coast.

Wir klettern die Stufen an der Steilküste hinab.

The sea is still quite turbulent. A litte bit of tide can be found in the northern Adriatic, so some of the underwater rocks are exposed.

Das Meer ist sehr aufgebracht und lebendig. Es herrschen leichte Gezeiten in der Adria und ein Teil der Felsen liegt bei Ebbe trocken.

We discover that some mussels have bored thier way into the rock itself.

Am Strand sehen wir wie sich Muscheln in die Steine eingegraben haben.

Beach treasures! These are the eggs of a marine snail.

Standfunde. Ein Laichballen einer Meeresschnecke.

These Snakelocks are still covered by a few cm of water.

Diese Wachsrosen sind noch von wenigen Zentimetern Wasser bedeckt.

These aren’t… probably urgently awaiting the tide 🙂

Then we acend up into the hills and get a good view over the salina.

Dann gehts von der Küste hinauf. Von den sanften Hügeln haben wir einen guten Blick auf die Saline.

Blue and Long Tailed Tits cross our way frequently.

Blaumeisen und Schwanzmeisen schwirren um uns herum!

We gather up some rosemarry next to the trail to use in our mobile kitchen.

Vom Wegesrand pflücken wir frischen Rosmarin für unsere mobile Küche.

The plentyful olive trees are full with olives. It’s harvest time and one can buy fresh olive oil at every corner.

Die vielen Olivenbäume hängen voller Früchte. Die Ernte ist in vollem Gange, überall kann frisches Olivenöl gekauft werden.

Slovenian wine! The grapes are soo sweet!

Slowenischer Wein! Die Trauben sind zuckersüß und lecker!

This banana tree has a few bananas, but little ones.

Diese Bananenpflanze hat eine kleine Staude ausgebildet.

Yummy! Kiwis grow over our heads but they are still hard as rocks.

Yummy! Kiwis wachsen über uns, sind aber noch steinhart.

What kind of vegetable could this be?

Maybe you can guess by the shape of the flower. It’s Artichokes!

Vielleicht hier an der verblühten Blüte? Es sind Artichoken!

And these arent oranges! What you see here are Kaki trees full with fruit but without any leaves. Looks kind of odd.

Hier seht ihr keine Orangen! Es handelt sich um einen Kaki-Baum, welcher ohne Blätter aber voller Früchte irgendwie witzig aussieht.

Here on the Strunjan large Kaki fields line the landscape. We “borrowed” one, but it wasn’t ripe yet and so our mouths got all numb and cottony. But the next supermarket had ripe ones, from Spain ?!

Hier auf der Halbinsel Strunjan werden große Kaki-Plantagen bewirtschaftet. Wir haben eine Frucht gemopst, sie waren leider noch nicht reif und betäubten die Zunge. Dafür gibt es im Supermarkt reife Kakis, aus Spanien ?!

Just like these cacti we are off following the sun southward.
